Hubli: Train Hits Road Roller, Derails Near Koppal

Hubli, Jun 18 (DHNS): The Vasco-Howrah-Amaravati Express train derailed at an unmanned level crossing between Bannikoppa and Bhanapur station in Gadag-Koppal section on Friday, when it hit a road roller.

The driver of the road roller died on the spot. Two engines and eight coaches, including five passenger coaches of the train were derailed.  Some passengers sustained injuries in the incident. Train driver Subbarayalu also suffered minor injuries. The injured have been admitted to the hospital.

The accident disrupted the train service on the route. The railway authorities arranged buses for Bellary and Hospet-bound passengers. Passengers who were going to Howrah from Hubli were brought back to Hubli.

The train driver noticed the road roller crossing the level crossing when he was about 200 meters away and brought down the speed of the train.  Eye witnesses said the casualties and damage would have been more had the train hit the road roller with full speed.
