Bengaluru, Feb 15: The state government would accord top priority for establishing University Constituent Under Graduate Colleges in and around the city, deputy chief minister and state higher education minister Dr C N Ashwatha Narayana said in the city on Monday.

He said that the district commissioner has been asked to hand over available government lands to the department of higher education to facilitate this process.

Sanction of 8000 lecturer posts was another urgent requirement to fill up vacancies, he said after convening a review meeting in the department of higher education.

Bengaluru has a population of around 1.5 crore and faces a shortage of government-run colleges as per the population ratio.

In order to fill this gap, University Constituent Under Graduate Colleges will be encouraged, he explained.

According to the new National Education Policy multi-disciplinary courses need to be encouraged.

"This demands spacious campuses to accommodate several departments in the same premises. If sufficient extent of land is not available in the core area of the city, land available in the proximity will be made use for this purpose," he said.

With regard to Bengaluru North University, an extent of 172 acre has been earmarked and 57 acre has been already handed over. Out of the remaining, about 62 acre is in government possession but technical issues need to be rectified.

Another 53 acre is in possession of private individuals and they are willing to hand over if land at alternative places is allotted to them along with title documents, he said pointing out that this process will be taken up immediately and the remaining land will be handed over to the university in one-month duration.

The Bengaluru North University Campus will come up in Jangamakote which falls under the Shidlaghatta taluk of Chikkaballapura district. The courses which have more employability will be given priority in this location which is also near to Bengaluru International Airport and a ‘Knowledge Park’ will be set up here, Dr Narayana said.
