Udupi, Feb 19: Local people staged protests here by locking the Udyavar gram panchayat office opposing the permission granted by the management officials to industries that are polluting the environment. The protesters expressed anguish shouting slogans against the officials who are granting permission to businesses against decisions of people, village meetings and panchayat meetings.
The new president and gram panchayat members, who opposed the sudden grant of permits without the notice of the ruling members, expressed their support for the public decision and said the village panchayat office was not open until the high-level officials had corrected the issue. He has said that he is ready to resign.
