Moodbidri, Jul 3: All the recognition I have received so far is due to newspaper, said newspaper collector Umesh Rao Yekkar.

He was speaking after receiving the honour accorded to him at his residence here to mark the Press Day on Thursday July 3. Newspaper reading provides stimulation to brains and is a source of entertainment. More than half of my newspaper collections have been provided by State Kannada Sahitya Parishad former president Harikrishna Punaroor.

Daijiworld Weekly editor-in-chief Hemacharya said that he was happy to have been witnessing an honour bestowed on a veteran. It is so rare to see elders being recognized in today’s times, he said.

Newspapers play a prominent role in development of the society, said Kinnigoli gram panchayat president Devaprasad Punaroor.

Strengthening local and rural reporters will only help provide journalism a new dimension, observed journalists’ forum, Udupi president Shekar Ajekar, who presided over the function.

Journalist Mithun too spoke on the occasion.

Yekkar was honoured by bestowing 30 newspapers and a coconut sapling. The programme was jointly organized by Journalists’ Forum, Shri College, Moodbidri and journalists of Mulky and Kinnigoli.
