Udupi: Trained girls showcase kayaking at Malpe beach on Women's Day

Udupi, Mar 8: The students trained in kayaking, water sports at General Thimmayya Adventure Academy on Monday March 8 showcased their adventure at the Arabian Sea, Malpe on the International Women’s Day, held.

The programme was organized by zilla panchayat Udupi, General Thimmayya Adventure Academy, Youth empowerment and Sports department, Dr G Shankar Government Women’s First Grade College Ajjarkad, Post Graduation Center Ajjarkad.

Sumithra Nayak, president of the city municipality council Udupi, inaugurated the kayaking sports event. The students started their kayaking journey from Malpe shore and reached St Mary’s Island.

In her inaugural address, Sumithra Nayak said, "Every day is women’s day now. A woman is engaged in one work or other from morning till evening. Women’s Day is celebrated to enjoy their rights and get opportunities. It was initially started to fight for rights. In the earlier days, women were restricted to home-making activities and now women can be seen in every sector and working in all fields as equal to men. It might be the result of that movement, that now women have all the freedom to do anything they want to do," she said.

ADC Sadashiv Prabhu said that courage is important to achieve anything in life.

One of the trained students, Rakshitha, shared her experience in kayaking rides, “Earlier we did not have the idea of kayaking rides. Now we are happy and enjoy it a lot. This is really an adventurous water sport because waves and tides vary from time to time. We have to learn certain skills to play water sports. The teacher of the academy has given proper training to us. I got a lot of experience. Initially, I had a phobia for high waves, but now there is no fear of water. I just wanted to continue this sport with the permission of my parents."

Sheela K Shetty, vice president of zilla panchayat, Lakshmi Manju Kola and others were present.

Bhaskar Shetty, principal of G Shankar Government Women's First Grade College Ajjarkad presided over the programme. Students of Sports, Dr G Shankar Government Women’s First Grade College Ajjarkad, MGM College Udupi participated in kayaking. Dinesh Suvarna trained the students in kayaking. Roshan Shetty, the assistant director of youth empowerment and sports department hosted the programme.
