Bengaluru: Former council chairman Pratapachandra Shetty demands UPCL closure

Bengaluru, Mar 11: Former chairman of Karnataka legislative council, K Prathapachandra Shetty, claimed that on account of the Udupi Power Corporation Ltd (UPCL) facility near Padubidri, environment is getting damaged and it has also been having adverse effects on the health of the people living in the region. He urged the government not to allow the company to operate and expand its operations till the pollution comes under control.

Raising the topic during the zero hour on Wednesday March 10, Shetty said that a committee of experts appointed by the National Green Tribunal has observed that within a ten-kilometre radius of the company covering 15 villages, between 2012 and 2020, Asthma incidence has risen by 17 percent, lung infection cases have gone up by 171 percent and cancer has increased by a whopping 293 percent.
