Udupi, Mar 11: Division of Paediatric Nephrology was inaugurated and an education session on kidney disease was organised at Kasturba Medical College & Hospital, Manipal on the account of World Kidney Day 2021. This year the theme is 'Living well with Kidney Disease'. Dr Pushpa G Kini, professor and unit head department of paediatrics, Kasturba Hospital, Manipal inaugurated the new division and said, “Patients with kidney disease should adopt these eight formulas in life for good living. They are positive thinking, regular visits to the doctor and undergo kidney function test, quit smoking, maintain a healthy diet, control blood pressure levels, have normal blood sugar level, drink adequate water, and refrain from consuming medicines without doctor consultation."
Dr Sharath K Rao, dean, KMC Manipal inaugurated the education session on kidney disease jointly organised by the department of nephrology, paediatrics and Prasanna School of Public Health, MAHE, Manipal. Speaking on the occasion Dr Rao said, “Every year, the second Thursday of March is celebrated as World Kidney Day. Looking at our lifestyle, we can see two major diseases, diabetes, and hypertension. These diseases affect the kidneys, but awareness of these diseases can reduce kidney damage by about 50%. But people are not aware of this. According to recent research, food grown from industrial waste can also cause kidney disease. We need to be aware of this and at least once a year it is necessary to undergo a test to check the functioning of the kidney."
C G Muthana, chief operating officer and Dr Avinash Shetty, medical superintendent, Dr Leslie E Lewis professor and head of the department of paediatrics, Dr Shankar Prasad N, professor and head of the department of nephrology were present.
Dr Manjunath Professor and head of the department of nephrology, Fr Muller Medical College, Mangaluru, Dr Shankar Prasad, Dr Ravindra Prabhu A, and Dr Dharshan Rangaswamy from the department of nephrology, Dr Navin S Salins from the department of palliative and supportive care gave patient education and awareness talk on kidney disease. Dr Shankar Prasad welcomed the gathering and Dr Leslie Lewis proposed the vote of thanks. Dr Dharshan Rangaswamy, gave an overview of the new unit of Paediatric Nephrology.
The Paediatric Nephrology Unit at Kasturba Medical College and Hospital will provide diagnostic evaluations, medical treatments, and follow-up monitoring for children who suffer from the entire spectrum of kidney and urinary diseases. In collaboration with specialists from other medical disciplines, including a psychologist, social worker, dietitian and rehabilitation therapists and management is customized to each child and family’s unique needs with all specially trained staff to treat children.
The new division will be overseen by Dr Dharshan Rangaswamy who has obtained the clinical fellowship in paediatric nephrology, approved from Royal Australasian College of Physicians, Sydney, Australia. He will be available for consultation every Monday and Friday and as an inaugural offer, free consultation and a 30% discount on laboratory investigations will be available till March 31.
