'Fire in AI Express': Airline Seeks Apology from TV News Channel
Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore (SB)

Mangalore, Jul 29: National airline Air India has sought an unconditional apology from the authorities of a television news channel for the telecast of wrong, baseless and unconfirmed report of fire in flight NO IX 811 that was scheduled to take off from Mangalore to Dubai on 9.30 pm on July 24.

Chellam Prasad, station manager, Air India in a letter to the news editor of Times Now channel, Mumbai has stated that the channel owes unconditionally apology for the baseless and unconfirmed report telecast by the channel on July 24 has caused serious and long term damage to the reputation and credibility of the national airline that always held passenger safety as its prime concern. Air India calls upon you to “inform” the viewers that the said report was unconfirmed and hence baseless and that the error is sincerely regretted, it is stated.

Further, Air India has called upon the channel to telecast the apology and also repeatedly telecast the corrective action in every news bulletin throughout the day so that the misinformed public may get the correct and true information. Also the channel has been asked to continuously flash the same as a caption on screen throughout the day. If failed legal remedy will be sought, states the letter.

It can be recalled here that close to midnight on Saturday July 24, television channel, Times Now broke the news that Air India flight IX 811 at Mangalore airport had caught fire just before take off. However, on further investigation it was found that the reports were false and the call to the duty manager at the airport regarding the fire was a hoax. Nevertheless, there was indeed a technical snag in the plane which caused a short delay before take off, but it was quickly sorted out and the flight took off from Mangalore and landed in Dubai safely.

I pity on those who love to travel on AirIndia express. I think once they should travel on AI express and it should go to cochin without landing at mangalore. After that experience the bus journey from cochin to mangalore. One of the most unpredictable journey. Air India has made my comfortable journey horrible. My opinion is TV channel need not apologize for whatever happened. One and the other way Air India is made for such news.

    @Pius
What you have heard is wrong, mate! Air India operates B737-800NG (new generation) aircrafts in Managalore and Kerala.. These planes are max 2-3 years in service and considering 20 years of service of aircrafts, these are very new.

I really love travelling on AI express. The prices are also competitive.

Don't believe everything you hear. :)

Point to youtube, facebook, blog or wikileak, or wikipedia, they are the service providers.

I guess more than the membership to PTI etc, they accept news from individual sources and they may for sure have immunity from the law. Moreover - it is hard for the publisher to accept the responsibility of remote events.

this is one reason, why Ranjita or others could not get any response from google, etc media houses.

I am inclined to accept that the media houses are right in getting this exposed, but the individual should look at the credibility of this house prior to converting them into facts.

Same is applicable to e-commerce where there is no shop, but one can buy and get what they want, most reliably - but with some risk that one has to mitigate or waive off.

There is something really wrong with the print and electronic media of the country. It seems they are hellbent in damaging the national carrier's image. This news is also published only by this website until now.

This step was indeed long awaited.

I Heard from many that Air India is sending old aged air crafts to Mangalore sector and not caring for the life of Mangaloreans and Keralites. Our Government is not giving permission for other Airlines so that they can retain the high fare which they are charging at present. Now we understand Air India Express is charging more then the other unbudgeted airlines because of no competition which has no justification. Is there is no influential person in Mangalore to stand and point this to them and we donot have any of our epresentatives to get it corrected? Can you compare the food and service they provide with the other Airline which they charge much less then other non budget Airlines? Someone please help our People.

I dont think these people will apoligise, because they are so strong that even law makers are in their hand. Some of the private news channels are capable of defamining anybody they want at a given time! These jokers will never change, but there should be a begining to eradicate all the bad in them, may this move from AI is the begining.

Good move by AI, If this would have been the case with any Pvt Airline what would have been the consequences?
No doubt there are many areas wherin AI should show its proffessionalism, at the same time just because its a Govt undertaking lets not speak cheap everytime about out AI Exp.
Even a small error is picturised as a big one by most of the media people and serious issues about pvt airlines are not even reported by the Media.
What kind of a diplomacy this is?

Very good move by Air India. What they have sought from the Television channel is absolutely correct, legal and necessary. Media, particularly Electronic media has taken everything for granted. If they are not questioned, they will tell everything and their believers will be fooled dangerously. I hope Air India will firmly, effectively fight on this issue. National media depend on local channels/source (here Kannada), hence without confirming (which is their foremost duty) in a hurry to BREAK the news they simply BARK these days. People should support Air India'a move and said channel must apologise, otherwise legal action should be taken on them strictly.

I had already written about this to the NDTV last week. The print & multi-media should be answerable to any nonsesne they write. They have no right to bring false & bad publicity to Air India & Mangalore airport.

Why an apology. What will the apology do. Drag the damn channel to the "express" court, levy hefty fines on the channel. Isn't GOI having double digit stake in the flag carrier? Show them what it means to take on the state....straight and simple.

This is really a very nice move by AIr India. The News Channel should tender an apology for giving out the wrong news and creating an atmosphere of fear and anxiety with a wrong piece of information.

Only by reacting in this manner, the media can be held responsible for its acts. Its high time the media needs to be tamed...

Very good action and decision from Air India so that in future no other channel should dare to attempt such carelessness. now adays every body is taking the national airline for granted and it is a shame that our very own news channels are doing this and also involved some of our own people.

AIR INDIA IS SEEKING APOLOGY FROM THE VISUAL MEDIA FOR THE MISTAKE OCCURED FROM THEM.WHAT ABOUT AIR INDIA IT SELF?THERE ARE DOZENS OF BLUNDER MISTAKES CAUSED FROM AIR INDIA AND THE PASSENGERS FACED A LOT OF INCONVENIENCES WHICH ENDED IN NIGHTMARES TOO. BUT THE AIR INDIA AUTHORITIES NEVER APOLOGIZED TO THE PASSENGERS. IN FACT THEY WERE MORE RUDELY WITH THE PASSENGERS.WHY?????BECAUSE IT IS SIMPLY BELONGS TO THE INDIAN GOVERNMENT?OR TO APPEASE THE PRIVATE AIRLINES?
