Mangalore: Tulu Textbook Process Gains Momentum – Paltady Made Committee President

Mangalore, Aug 7: Tulu Sahitya Academy president, Dr Paltady Ramakrishna Achar, has been made the president of Tulu Textbook Committee. This has rekindled the hope that the Tulu textbook will get printed at an early date, and will provide the students aspiring to learn this language in schools, with a platform to build their knowledge.

The state government has already given its permission to teach Tulu as a third language in the sixth standard from this year onwards. The language will be taught in schools located in Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts. In a textbook workshop held in Puttur, it was decided to teach Tulu by using Kannada script, and to teach the language till high school level alone. At the same time, the students will be introduced to the Tulu script.

The state government has, through an order, formed committee and advisory committee for the creation of Tulu textbook. B Aithappa Naik, director, Karnataka Textbooks Committee, has been made its secretary, while Dr Sundar Kenaje, Ramesh Kalmadi, Mallika Shetty, Vidyarashmi, B K Ramesh and Uday Dharmasthala have been made its members. Taranath Kairangala will draw paintings required for the book. Tulu Academy registrar, Chandrahas Rai, will be the executive officer.

Prof G S Mudambadittaya, Dr N Sukumar Gowda, Dr U P Upadhyaya, Dr Amrit Someshwar and Dr B M Hegde have been chosen as the members of the advisory committee.

As Tulu grammar is a little different from Kannada, in the preliminary stages, only simple exercises will be given to students. At high school level, the students will be taught more complex aspects of Tulu grammar. It is proposed to incorporate folklores and creations of renowned poets while teaching Tulu. The texts already written have covered natural resources, cultural heroes, valiant women, life histories of some writers and freedom writers, stories from the past, folk games, festivals etc., of Tulunadu.

    Ronald F. - Your views are as you said a "frog in the well" attitude. According to you, learning Tulu or any language is a hindrance to growth. If this is the way you see it then you will need to do things that only help you get a job or money. Prostitution could get a thumbs up in your view.
    I think we should look at it in a different angle. This is not just for Tulu but any language one is proud off. Tuluva's are very proud of their mother tongue. It is just that the we were given a raw deal by associating with the larger Kannada population that we became dispensable. It is just the sheer hardwork put in the last 100 years that we are shining.
    I also agree with Satish Kunder that we need to put emphasis on the Tulu script as well.

    Efforts should be made to revive the script which has almost gone into extinction. Hebrew script was saved from total extinction soon after the establishment of Israel as a nation. The propogators of Tulu should bring back the script to life through similar efforts.

    Great News! In Bahrain, Kannada language is taught as optional subject in Indian Schools from '90s. Most of our children from Bahrain, who goes for higher studies to Karnataka, knows how to read and write in kannada. When this can happen in a Gulf country, why can't we teach tulu in Mangalore? we should have started to teach tulu in schools a long back. nanaandala ee edde kelasa bega avadu.

    Nana jokulu tulu kalthed DK la Udupid la benth thindinda yavu, olula pidayi povodunth dala ijji. Kappe guveldha ulay kullud unduve prapancha undh pandilekka aand kathe!!!!!!!!

    To teach Tulu by using Kannada script may not be a wise idea. Tulu script should have been introduced and taught from the beginning. Then only tulu can grow.

    Dr.Paltady Ramakrishna Achar is the right person, whom the govt.has chosen to appoint as chairman of Tulu text book committee. It is a long time demand of Tuluvas that Tulu be taught as a language in both D.K. and Udupi districts. Nana joklu saletu tulu kalpina dina doora ijji.
