Mumbai, May 4: A 32-year-old labourer was convicted to five years imprisonment by a session court for possessing fake currency worth Rs 15,000 in 2012. The accused went absconding during trial and was caught again only in 2017.

Two others were also found guilty in the case. The currency recovered were 30 notes of Rs 500 denomination. "The prosecution has proved that the accused, in agreement with other co-accused, was found in possession of counterfeit currency notes which were intended to be used as genuine, and the accused is therefore liable to be convicted," the court said.

The court held that considering the nature of offence and that he is still young, Tarifullah Mohaldar, the convict, is not entitled to be let off on a bond of good behaviour. Pointing out that while the maximum sentence was seven years imprisonment, the court said that one of the relevant factors for awarding five years is 'the quantity of the notes found' in possession of the accused.
