Tokyo Olympics: Wrestler Ravi Kumar loses in final, bags silver in 57kg freestyle

Tokyo, Aug 5 (IANS): Indian wrestler Ravi Kumar won the silver medal in men's freestyle 57kg after losing to Russian Olympic Committee's (ROC) Zavur Uguev in the final at the Tokyo Olympics on Thursday. The ROC wrestler won the bout 7-4 on points.

Ravi Kumar, who had reached the final by beating Sanayev Nurislam of Kazakhstan in the semifinal, found Uguev, a two-time World Champion, too strong and too determined to win the gold. The Russian won early points and then defended strongly, without giving Ravi Kumar many chances.

Ravi Kumar won India's second silver medal in the Olympics after Sushil Kumar who won in 66kg freestyle in the London Olympics in 2012.

He is the fifth Indian wrestler after KD Jadhav, Sushil Kumar, Yogeshwar Dutt, and Sakshi Malik to finish on the Olympic podium.

Getting selected to participate in Olympics needs years of practice. Winning a medal (any) is no less than a great achievement. The word LOSES makes it feel less than what this young man has achieved. Well done Mr Ravi Kumar!

these sportsmen represent the country... when they win medals, their state announces reward... central govt. functionaries applaud, tweet and show off by showering words... Haryana CM announced 4 core award for Dahia... at the current rate of value of money, at least 5 crores for gold medal winner, 3 for silver and 2 for bronze medalist is required from CENTRAL government.. they can buy good house and concentrate on sports... mere "'cheer leading'" by applause, hand raising, tweet, left handed applause etc. etc. will not do... both centre and states should reward them financially in good measure... for their hard work and dedication... more the value of rewards the better for the sportspersons and their family... The PM can also appeal to all business houses (especially those who are favoured by govt.) to announce rewards for the winning sportsmen...
