Mangaluru: After cocoa, areca nut, tasty Holige made of betel leaves

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Aug 5: After the successful introduction of Holige (sweet pancake) made from cocoa and areca nuts recently, a new variety of Holige has emerged. This new kind of Holige promises to be tasty and fragrant. It is made from betel leaves. Srikrishna Shastri from Gurimoole village, who was instrumental in inventing cocoa and areca nut Holige sometime back, is again the man who has introduced this new variety of Holige. Shastri is an expert cook.

Shastri has made use of big size betel leaves to make this sweet dish. Forty Holiges have been made by using about 25 betel leaves (Kavale variety). Currently, the Holige is priced at Rs 15 per piece. This Holige is made by grinding all the ingredients together in a mixer grinder and then inserting balls made from the dough into the outer covering made of Maida. Its taste is just like the customary Thamboolam. Shastri opines that this is not bad for health as it is made of betel leaves.

Campco had made Kaju Supari by using areca nut powder that is normally used for making the Thamboolam in the past. Ideal ice creams has already introduced Thamboolam ice cream. Now Shastri Home Products is raring to enter the market to cater to the taste buds of the lovers of both Thamboolam and Holige.

Holige varieties of Puttur, Vittla, Sullia, Belthangady areas made by Havyaka Bhats are different in taste and texture than others. There are varieties like bele holige, kai hoilge, rave(sajjige) holige etc. Arecaunut, cocoa, beetel leaf etc are recent inventions. They serve bele holige with coconut milk and hot ghee which taste can't be matched with others. Bengaluru style obbattu is wonderful in taste only when consumed hot and fresh. But Puttur Bhatra style holige can be consumed even after 3 days and taste doesn't change. Visit youtube channel Bht n'Bhat which is my favourite. A young boy presents traditional cookings with utmost love and enthusiasm.

Lock down made people ti use their free time on new inventions to promote some produces. How can one compare original holiges to some unuknown ingredients. Is that fooling people ? Babaramdev too makes some products which are in the market for decades. Just copy cat by giving his brand name Pathanjali !

Flavian, I had eaten holiges in different places. There is a Holige Mane (House of Holige) near our residence in Bangalore. There, we can find some 25 varieties of holiges. As you said, none of these holiges made by the recent refinements, match with the original authentic holiges that were traditionally came down from our forefathers, which we may get a chance to eat, sometime when we attend a Hindu wedding, if the holiges served there are made by some Bhatji cooks. Except the original, others are just commercial ploys.
