Mangalore, Oct 6: A protest was organized in the city under the leadership of Dakshina Kannada Taximen and Maxicab Owners Association on Wednesday October 6 morning. They were agitated over the use of private vehicles for publicity purposes of a new jewellery show room set to be opened on Falnir Road in the city shortly.

The protestors alleged that a firm, which has bagged a contract for supply of vehicles by the jewellery show room for publicity purposes, has supplied vehicles bearing private registration numbers, for the purposes. They were angry at the use of private vehicles for commercial purposes, as it not only violates law, but also results in losses to the taxis that are registered as commercial vehicles, and therefore, pay higher road taxes. They further pointed out that in case of any untoward incidents while on commercial duty, these vehicles will not be eligible to claim insurance and other compensation.

The agitators, who blocked the said vehicles that were parked at Hampankatta in the city on Wednesday morning from moving out, were led by Monappa Bhandary, president of the said association, and Satish Bhat, general secretary. They also presented a memorandum to the regional transport officer, containing the above points. The regional transport office seized ten vehicles in this connection, thereafter.

Discussions are being held between various parties concerned now, relating to the above incident.

This agitation seems funny. Any private firm has a right to use vehicles of his choice for advertisement. Why should taximen bother? It is the city corporation which has to see whether they have paid for advertisement in public places.

It looks Mangaloreans are fed up with politics that happening around and getting educated themselves and protesting for the right cause. That’s the good sign from Mangaloreans. Let other associates also look around and fight for the right if someone tries to steal from you.

Taximens demand is correct. Private vehicles should not be used for commercial purpose. Transport Dept & Govt should think on this. First of all there is a tax loss to the Govt same time business loss to the Taximen. Same should apply to the Hotel & Tourism Industry vehicles too.

The taximen should not take the law in their own hands. If they are agitated with the private vehicles having the advertisements, they should approach the relevant authorities with their grivances.
By protesting against the private vehicles using ads, the taximen have given free publicity to the jewellery shop!

Are fast food café scooters carrying the home delivery allowed? Are the politicians organising private vehicles to canvass for their parties are allowed? Are the religious organisations blaring on mikes to attend their functions organised at public properties allowed? This is the work of some fringe communal groups to disturb the progress of a particular community. Again, I am for sure that some strong brains from the same business community affiliated to a political party are behind this disturbance. I request the police not to hesitate to arrest the culprits who are hindrance to our city growth.
