Bengaluru, Oct 6: The government looks like having adopted delaying tactics in the matter of Datta Peeta, even after the high court directed it to appoint a Hindu priest at the Datta Peeta. By deciding to form a cabinet sub-committee to determine how to proceed in the matter, the government has sprung a surprise.

It may be recalled that the government had fumbled in the matter of demolition of temples, after a temple in Mysuru district was razed to the ground. Now it is deemed that the government, by forming a sub-committee, wants to bide time, perhaps to make sure that it does not fumble on this issue.

The high court, referring to the Ram Janma Bhoomi verdict, observed that faith is a matter of individual choice but when the court gets suitable documentary proof about the faith, the same needs to be handed over to those who have faith in it. The government had before it the option of understanding the sentiments of the two communities and taking suitable steps swiftly. Instead of taking a decision in the cabinet meeting or seeking legal opinion, the government has chosen to form a sub-committee, and the people suspect that this is a ploy to delay the decision.

After the cabinet meeting, law minister, J C Madhuswamy, gave information about the said decision. He said that the subcommittee will discuss all the issues including whether an affidavit has to be filed in the high court by the government.
