Mangaluru: MLA's proposal to name circle after Savarkar sparks controversy

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru (DV)

Mangaluru, Nov 5: A proposal to rename a circle in Suratkal by the local BJP MLA has stirred a controversy that has gained media attention even at the national level.

Last week, Mangaluru North MLA Bharath Shetty, during a council meeting, mooted a proposal to name Suratkal circle after Veer Savarkar. He placed the proposal before the standing committee on town planning.

However, his proposal has not gone down well with opposition parties, who have condemned his action and threatened a protest.

Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) has warned of holding a district-wide protest if Suratkal circle is named after Savarkar.

Defending his move, MLA Bharath Shetty speaking to daijiworld said, "I do not know why they (Congress, SDPI and others) are opposing this. Vinayak Damodar Savarkar was a freedom fighter who dedicated his life for the nation. Even the late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had good words for him. I do not know why they are calling him a controversial figure, he is not controversial figure. He is freedom fighter and a great leader.

"His work inspired many other freedom fighters. He is the only freedom who underwent Kalapani punishment twice. He lived his entire life for us, not for himself. We cannot forget people who lived their life only for us.

"I do not know what Congress and SDPI contend. It is likely that there might be some preconception or political motivation. I am not bothered about it. I think they should read history. The proposal is under legal process, and it will take its due course," the MLA said.

SDPI in a media release condemned the proposal. SDPI corporator Muneeb Bengre said, '"We have already discussed the issue in the party meeting. If the Surthkal junction is named after Savarkar, we will take legal action against it. We will also hold district-wide protests. I will also oppose this in the next town planning standing committee meeting," he said.

Munib Bengre, Shamshad Aboobakkar and opposition leader A C Vinaraj have sought notices for the meeting.

Speaking to daijiworld, corporator Vinayaraj said, "We will oppose the proposal to name Suratkal junction after Veer Savarkar. Savarkar was in prision for two years in Mahathma Gandhiji's assasiation case and was involved in murder conspiracy. He wrote three apologies to the British government when he was in Andaman jail. There is no historical mention of his contribution to the country. We will not accept a person who supported Godse, the person who assassinated Gandhi. We will discuss the further course of action after holding discussions in the party."

In the five years that Savarkar spent in London as a law student, he galvanised the revolutionary movement that sought total and complete freedom from British rule. From India to Europe, and even America, a network of bravehearts guided by him, made contacts with Irish, French, Italian, Russian and American leaders, revolutionaries and the press to bring British India to the forefront of global discourse. No doubt, the British government categorised him as one of the most dangerous seditionists. Under an unfair Fugitive Offenders Act (FOA) of 1881 that did not apply to him because he was a bonafide student in London and not a fugitive, Savarkar was deported to India and tried with no right to appeal or defence. He was slapped with two life imprisonments, totalling 50 years, to rot in the Cellular Jail of the Andamans along with his elder brother Ganesh Damodar Savarkar. The British documents speak of how petrified they were of his very presence and hence wanted him as far away from the Indian mainland as possible.

Was Savarkar behind Gandhi’s assassination? The Gandhi murder case ended in 1949 after the Red Fort trial. Of all the nine accused, Savarkar alone was exonerated and acquitted. Nathuram Godse and Narayan Apte were executed, while others like Gopal Godse, Vishnu Karkare and Madan Lal Pahwa were given about 15 years of imprisonment. So, when the latter came out of jail in 1964-65, they were given a huge public reception in Pune. At that time, GV Ketkar, the then editor of Keshri, made a stunning statement that he had the knowledge of Gandhi’s murder much before it had happened and that he conveyed the same to the Maharashtra government and the Centre. It created a huge ruckus and the Jeevan Lal Kapur Commission was set up to look into Ketkar’s allegations. There is no doubt that Godse and Apte were Savarakrite, a powerful clique in the Hindu Mahasabha. The Jeevan Lal Kapur Commission erred in equating Savarakrite with Savarkar when it said that because of the involvement of Godse and Apte, belonging to the Savarakrite group, there’s no doubt that Savarkar was behind the conspiracy. This was an extrapolation and there was no corroborative evidence to back this assumption. As recently as in March 2018, the Supreme Court said, “The submission of the petitioner that Savarkar has been held guilty for the murder of Gandhiji is misplaced.” Over and over again, Savarkar has been given a clean chit, but due to political pettiness and one-upmanship, his name continues to be dragged in the assassination case.

why is there so much ignorance about Savarkar? people have probably not read much about him? Was there a secret understanding between Savarkar and the British? One is made to believe that Savarkar had written the letter secretly, in collaboration with the British. Far from it, he openly mentioned it in his Marathi memoir, Mazi Janmathep (My Transportation for Life), and also in Echoes from the Andamans, which published all his letters to his younger brother, Narayan Rao. Also, had there been any secret understanding between Savarkar and the British government, the former would not have been told to abstain from politics for five years, which later got extended to 13 years.

Shaukat Ali: Muslims are agitated against Hindu Sangathan, I’ll leave you to your fate if you don’t give up VeerSavarkar : mighty British raj couldn’t brow beat me,a handful Muslims armed with knives would never succeed! Some of the reasons why present day Congress doesnt want people to know more about savarkar. 1. Savarakar wanted complete abolition of caste, whem India got independence. Ambedkar took demanded the same. whereas Gandhi wanted caste system to continue. 2.Savarkar was against partition based on religiuos lines of this country. Gandhi succumbed to the proposal laid down bt Jinnah.

The very fact that, so many do not know the work of savarkar, but have read some biased newsreport about him, demands more discussion on him. Savarkar was against the appeasement policy of the congress. Savarakar was against the pacifist policy of Gandhi. Indira Gandhi not only wrote tributes about savarkar, but also personally contributed for setting up a Savarkar Library.

Road towards Mangalore could be named after Veer Savarkar Road....South towards Mulky after your political Guru and guy who made you Dental association member ( when lead to CBI raid on your house / even though CBI could not prove anything against you !!! ) Veer Amarnath Shetty Road ....and last one road going towards East Katipalla as Veer / Shahid Kabeer Road ( Who was martyred by Police for Cow theft)..... This formulae will be acceptable to all....BJPeee....SDPI.....and CONgress... ...Tak...Takk...

Even after spending 10 years in cellular jail,he was still not allowed free movement for the next 13 years. That's 23 yeas in Total. If he was British stooge, why did they restrict him for 23 years? It was on 6 January 1924 that Savarkar was released from prison but kept under strict surveillance within the frontiers of Ratnagiri district and debarred from political activity. He spent the next 13 years of his life this way. But it did not stop him from beginning a series of social reforms in Ratnagiri to break the caste system. Long before the Harijan movement or B.R. Ambedkar’s clarion call, Savarkar championed inter-caste dining and also built a Patit Pavan temple in Ratnagiri that allowed entry to all castes.

Congress under Gandhi also supported the British. Indian National Congress openly supported Britain during this crucial period. When the War broke out, Mahatma Gandhi was in England where he began organizing a medical corps similar to the force he had led in aid of the British during the Boer War and even won a gold medal for loyalty. In a circular dated 22 September 1914, he called for recruitment to his Field Ambulance Training Corps. On his return to India in January 1915, Gandhi ji offered unconditional support for British efforts in the War and believed that it was not a good time to embarrass Britain or take advantage of her troubled situation to further the Indian liberation cause.“England’s need,” he said, “should not be turned into our opportunity and that it was more becoming and far-sighted not to press our demands while the war lasted.” Marching from village to village in Gujarat, he recruited volunteers to assist the British in the War. How was this any different from Savarkar’s 1914 petition then?

British on savarkars plea. Interestingly, on his way back to India, Craddock wrote his report onboard the ship where he said that Savarkar “cannot be said to express any regret or repentance” for whatever he did. “So important a leader is he,” Craddock noted, “that the European section of the Indian anarchists would plot for his escape which would before long be organised. If he were allowed outside the Cellular Jail in the Andamans, his escape would be certain. His friends could easily charter a steamer to lie off one of the islands and a little money distributed locally would do the rest.” The government obviously rejected his petition and nothing changed for Savarkar.

Gandhi and savarakar . Mahatma Gandhi addressed Savarkar as “bhai” in a letter he wrote from Sevagram, Maharashtra, on 22 March 1945 (Collected Works of Gandhi, e-book, Publication Division, GOI, Volume 86, Page 86), after the death of the latter’s brother. Here is the text of the letter: “BHAI SAVARKAR, I write this after reading the news of the death of your brother. I had done a little bit for his release and ever since I had been taking an interest in him. Where is the need to condole with you? We are ourselves in the jaws of death. I hope his family are all right. Yours, M.K. GANDHI.” In another letter (Collected Works of Gandhi, Volume 38, page 138), Gandhi said, “I shall try to do whatever I can for political prisoners. It has never happened that I kept quiet out of fear. Even with regard to political prisoners, I would consider it improper to do anything for those who are in prison for crimes of murder. I shall not argue the point. I shall of course do my utmost for Bhai Vinayak Savarkar.”

First set the Road Chaos in order...its a real mess... Dangerous ,Life threatening and absurd... The bridge deliberately wrongly placed has added to the noise pollution and a lot of accidents have taken place.... No proper warning boards,no Red lights......Chaos reigns supreme... God save us All...
