Kukke Subrahmanya Temple's Madesnana Ritual Draws Protests

Bangalore: Kukke Subrahmanya Temple's Madesnana Ritual Draws Protests

Bangalore, Dec 12 (IANS) A bizarre tradition of people rolling over plantain leaves with leftovers of meals eaten by Brahmins at a Karnataka temple to cure themselves of skin ailments is igniting protests.

Called the 'urulu seve' (roll over ritual), the tradition at the Kukke Subramanya temple in the coastal district of Dakshina Kannada is said to have been followed for 400 years, according to temple authorities.

The ritual is undertaken in the belief that it will cure people of skin ailments. It is performed on the annual 'shasthi' - sixth day of the month - festival.

The three-day festival concluded Saturday and the ritual was performed Friday by many men and women amid protests by a small group of people.

Now, several organisations in Karnataka have begun a campaign to ban the practice saying it is inhuman.

Though people from all castes, including Brahmins, perform the ritual, a majority of them are said to be Dalits and those from backward classes.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati, a Dalit herself, wants it banned. She issued a statement to this effect in Lucknow Saturday.

Temple authorities say they do not force anyone to perform the ritual.

The protesters were upset that the practice was allowed, though the temple was under the state government's Muzrai (religious affairs) department.

Muzrai minister termed the practice "innocuous". He said no one was forced by the temple authorities to perform the ritual. "It is a matter of belief," he said.

The temple, about 300 km from here, is devoted to Subramanya. The idol of Subramanya is in the shape of a nine-headed serpent. Legend has it that Subramanya protected serpent god Vasuki who had taken shelter in a cave at Kukke from Garuda.

A well-known ritual performed at the temple is 'sarpa samskara' to ward off the effect of 'sarpa dosha' - curse of the serpent god.

Among the celebrities who have prayed at the temple is cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar.

    Hi guys,
This is an issue of hindu rituals. So we hindus will discuss about this issue.

So Roberts n Unaids pls dont scratch ur head.

Coming to "made snana" , this is one of the worst practice I have ever seen.

In my childhood I have seen people doing this disgusting act. Ya its very painful to see these kind of rituals.

Friends for a while think of a brahmin who does a non brahminic act, then R U READY to accept him as a Brahmin?

If the same person leaves his meal for some one to roll over it, logically does it make any sense.

The word Brahmin has no significance at all in Modern times. As swami vivekaanandha said "Only by CONDUCT does a person beomes a Brahmin(Brahma Gjnaani=one who has thorough knowledge about Brahmam) or other caste. Yudhistra also in Maha Bharatha tells yaksha (Yama) "A brhmin is recognised by his/her CONDUCT(Charithram) only".
So please let us stop this old practice, simply to strenthen our Hindu community.
Becoz of these practices, people like Pinto, Robert n Junaid are twittering in our discussion. These people are sponsered by their community to unstablize us.
TIME TO SAY STOP EVIL SPIRIT
ITS HIGH TIME TO ENHANCE OUR SPIRITUALITY.
    JAI HIND

The age old tradition created by some one who were after keeping distance from other castes must be abolished immediately, instead all hindu's irrespective of the caste must be trained for vaishnava deeksha & perform the worship of god by themselves without having any dependence.Government must intervene & stop such henous tradition like they stopped the "bettale seve".This is nothing but the imposing of the age old disbelief created by the uppercastes to suppress the poor & literally backward innocent people. The similar traditions if any must be stopped immediately, thanks to the media & the lot of intallectual's who supported the eradication of such beleifs. There are several people who cannot digest the intereference, are hell bent in continuing the prevailing exploitation of the poor in the name of religion to continue,as they still practice having their food served in a seperate area, in the temples with delicacies where as others are served the different food altogether despite seeng the equality in Shree Kshetra Dharmastala.

Mr. Rohan Pinto, Mr. Wolf, Mr. A. S. Mathews and other dear readers, I can accept your point of superiority of one caste over others in Hinduism, only if you acknowledge the fact that discrimination & inequality exists in all religions. Take for instance Christianity, the catholics consider them superior over other sects such as protestants, etc. and protestants are discriminated against. Moreover, what about Dalit Christians? Why do you still call them Dalit Christians if you do not believe in caste and preach equality. My friends, with a little introspection you will realize that the same wine exists in every religion albeit packaged differently.

I think Madesnana is not done to cure skin ailments.. the main aim being "subjugation to the Almighty" i.e rolling even on the food left over by His devotees.... In other words, removing of the ego in oneself... With regard to Brahmin Dalit thing, also vice versa is true many times, EVEN BRAHMINS ROLL OVER THE LEFTOVERS OF THE FOOD EATEN BY THE DALITS...

Dear Mr. Pramod udupi / USA,

How conveniently you write that you as a Brahmin 'would not care if someone rolled over on your leftover food and that Brahmins are not forcing anyone to make this snana'. That does not sound very proactive from a Brahmin perspective. Brahmins should make a conscious effort to eradicate this practice of casteism. This tradition is all a root of casteism and casteism was started by brahmins! As per brahmin perspective, all men are NOT created equal! Remove this inequality and all of hinduism problems will be resolved.

No one forces to do or not to do in the madasnana. But there is strong belief in the minds of people as result of which this is going on over centuries. I oppose the allegations on Brahmins as they never ask or insist for this act. I have seen it few years back, wherin people where eagerly waiting for madesnana & rush towards the act with great enthusiasm. Only high intellectuals who have no other work except commenting others criticise the act.

    Mr. Pramod:

Can you please tell me the percentage of the Brahmins and Dalits rolling
over the food waste? Also, the
    ratio of skin problems affecting
in those two groups? If this
holy-rolling is a panacea for all
    the skin problems and allergies,
then we need to train all the
    dermatologists into some other
specialities. If we dig down the
root cause of this tradition, it will be clear and plain to the world that, there was a psychological ploy of the upper class to enslave the lower class.
It is hard even for the higher
class and educated people to dicard
a religious tradition. Then what about the illiterate people?

    If the mother-in-law is insisting
    the daughter-in-law that she has
to say namaste to her on a daily
baisis, that is a demanding order.
    But telling the daughter-in-law
to wash her feet every morning and
use that water to wash the face of the daughter-in-law that is a cruel, demoralizing and enslaving
    psychological manipulation of the mind.

Mr. Arun, Dubai: In your mentality, if you happend to see
somebody pouring acid on the body
with a blind belief that he or she can
get baby skin, it won't bother you
even though you know that acid can
destroy the skin. As human beings,
    we have a moral obligation,
atleast to raise our voice against
any kind of social injustice and
exploitation of the weak section of the society.

Then why one sect in Islam is considered superior to other sects and are discriminated & prosecuted? Likewise there are many more questions. The moral is my friend, there is a wide gap between preaching and practicing. Do not worry, we will sort out our issues and I advise you to sort out issues in your religion.

Then how the Brahmins will get their skin deseases be cured? This is pure superstition at least does not have any reason behind this ritual. I wish that politicians and social workers come and stop this in human and irreligious practice humiliating the low cast people. This practice should be banned forever. Doddanna - Damaskatte

It is like the old traditions
    practiced by some people years
    back in Kerala.

Eating the leftover food by the
Priests. I do remember about 50 years back, when somebody took the
left over food in the banana leaves
to a room for somebody to
eat, my father scolded him to throw
    away outside. The three priests
showed displeasure (one was my cousin), and the rest
of the people kept quite and
surprised by my dad's bold and revolutionary statement. All
    religions have used many such
    foolish traditions created by
gullible people in fear of God
    and the religious hierarchy. But
the pradox is, how the hierarchy
    gave indirect support and
    motivations to the unsuspecting
    and gullible religious followers?

    The Brahmin communisty has to
    correct this misguided tradition.
If people believe that rolling over
    food item will create healing,
let them do on fresh food, not on
the food waste left by the
    Brahmins, which was indeed a
    trick to establish their spiritual
supremacy. In one State, it was
    eating, but in another State,
simply rolling over the food waste.
What a joke in the name of religion!

This primitive practice will have to come to an end just like the age old 'sati' and the 'nude procession' for Yellamma at the Savadatti. I heard there is a religious ritual still prevalent in a remote area in Karnataka wherein they throw babies from a great height. As people become more and more educated and enlightened these extreme kinds of religious practices eventually vanish.
