Bengaluru, Jan 21: Several petitions filed in the state high court have accused the universities of not obeying the interim orders of the high court not to impose Kannada learning on the degree students in Karnataka. The orders had asked the universities to allow the students to study the languages of their choice, they said.

Petitions filed by the Sanskrit Bharati Trust college, Sanskrit Professors Association and organizations and students in this regard came up for consideration before the division bench headed by the Chief Justice of the state high court, Justice Ritu Raj Awasthi on Thursday January 21.

Senior advocate S S Naganamd, appearing for Sanskrit Bharati Trust, stated that the high court had earlier directed the universities to allow the students to learn the languages of their choice. The colleges under the universities claim that they were not told about this stand. The students are pressured to learn Kannada as a result," he argued. Advocate Sridhar Prabhu, arguing for the students, said that semester exams of degree classes will begin on February 15 and therefore urged the high court to dispose of the petitions immediately and to fix dates for the same.

The bench said that arguments of all the parties concerned will be heard, before filing the next date of hearing as January 31.
