Bengaluru, Jan 25: National Investigation Agency (NIA) has approached the state high court seeking cancellation of bail granted to four persons who have been accused of attempting illegal human trafficking of Sri Lankan citizens to Canada through Mangaluru.

The division bench of the high court headed by Justice Alok Aradhe which scrutinized the criminal appeal filed by NIA issued notices to four accused from Tamil Nadu, Rasool, Saddam Hussain, Andul Mohitu and Socrates, before adjourning the hearing.

Advocate Prasanna Kumar P, arguing on behalf of NIA, said that the special court had unilaterally granted bail and that the court was wrong in doing so without properly understanding the gravity of the offence. He also pointed out that the accused had provided surety documents thrice in an effort to come out on bail granted to them. However, he said, the surety documents provided by them on all the three occasions were fake, which in itself is a serious offense, he argued.

The Mangaluru (south) police had, based on reliable information, raided Sea Fort Guest House on Azizuddin Road Mangaluru on July 1, 2021. They had unearthed a racket of transporting 25 Sri Lankan citizens to Canada via Mangaluru. A total of 38 Sri Lankan citizens were arrested on this occasion.
