Mumbai, Dec 22:
Renowned Konkani playwright, director, actor and columnist Sunny D’Souza passed away at St Antony's Ashram in Mangalore on Tuesday December 22.

He had been living at Shirva for the past many months and was admitted to Father Muller Hospital, Mangalore this week.

Sunny D’Souza was born in Bendore, Mangalore and retired after putting in 45 years of service with Hard Castle Ward Company in Mumbai. He was actively associated with several Konkani journals like Jagmag, Vishal Konkan, Kanas, Kutam besides serving as the assistant editor of Mumbai-based Poinnari Konkani weekly. He was well-known for his question–answer sections of both Kutam and Poinnari weeklies.

Sunny D’Souza’s first poem was published in Mangalore's Raknno Konkani weekly in its silver jubilee edition. His play 'Naach Konknya Naach' was broadcast for the first time in All India Radio (AIR). He was the playwright of nearly 30 plays including 'Bangar Piklam,' 'Raktachi Jalim Dukam,' 'Magown Getlo Kuris,' 'Antu Kuris,' 'Hasanatlo To Piso,' 'Gatt Far Sodinaka,' and 'Simti Natlo Kolo.' His play 'Hasanatlo To Piso' was a popular play that was staged across Mumbai on several occasions.

He had also directed Konkani plays alongside veteran director Henry D’Silva Suratkal.

Although Sunny had lost a leg in a tram accident that occurred near Fort here in 1953, he continued to render his yeomen service in Konkani theater and journalism. His grit and determination in overcoming the disability was exemplary. He had been honoured by various Konkani organizations in Mumbai. He had also been awarded the titles of Nataratna and Kalaratna by Konkani organizations in recognition of his contributions to Konkani theater and art.

Veteran Konkani dramatists and directors Francis Fernandes Cascia, Henry D’Silva Suratkal, John Sequeira Sakinaka, Leo Fernandes, Clement Lobo Nakre, Joy Paladka, Joker Cascia, Kutam, Konkani weekly editor Henry D’Paula, entrepreneur Albert W D’Souza, Francis Rasquinha, Maxim Mathias, Gilbert Baptist, singer Henry D’Souza, Victor Concesso and others condoled the demise of the veteran artiste-journalist.

Dear Richhi L. M. Serrao, Instead of condoling the demise of late Sunnyab, you have indulged in his personal family matters, involving his kiths and kins. You agree that time was short - he died at 5 pm. and the funeral was arranged for next morning barely within 16 hours of late evening. It appears that you have done some mud-slinging and also hurt his people, their emotions, when they needed some consolation and moral support. It is not a Christian spirit - more so, when the festive season was about to commence. Were you fully aware of the actual facts, situation and circumstances of his family ???????

After reading comments from Dr.Edward Nazereth & Ricchi L.M.Serrao, I also like to share that we "KONKAN TARAM" Jerimeri Mumbai & "Konkan Theatre Group Mumbai" have supported Sunnyaab when he was at Mumbai, especially when he was hospitalised. We would have even attended to his funeral if there was sufficient time to reach Mangalore. We were so unlucky and helpless that he expired on 22nd evening and buried at 9.30 morning on 23rd. We remember his words when he inaugurated our KONKAN TARAM association in the year 1990. While lighting the lamp he said “havem petaoilli hi ponti kedallai palvana zaanv, ani ho konkni sang vorsan voras balvondi”. With his blessings our association “KONKAN TARAM” Jerimeri is active. His memory power was so sharp that he was dialing most of the tel & mobile numbers from his memory. While some of us met him recently on 3rd Dec. at Fr. Muller’s Hospital, he conveyed his regards to many of the group members and friends at Mumbai and also conveyed that he wants to write one more Drama and the title is “SARGINCHA DARAR”. At the time of passing his comments he himself presented to our Lord Almighty at “SARGINCHA DARAR”. Shri Sunny A. D’souza was an advisor, a supporter, a well wisher of our association. His absence is a great loss for whole Konkani world. We miss him a lot. No doubt he will remain in our hearts & in our daily prayers for ever.

I started reading Konkani papers with Question/Answers (Savalam/Japi) coulmn by Sunny A D'Souza of Poinnari, as those were Apt, full of humor & knowledge, when I was in school in Mangalore,
Meeting him in Mumbai was a great feeling during my college. Acting in his Play "Hasanatulo to Piso" was a big surprise. Basically I have learned much more from him than just acting...he was a great institution for many I believe….

This morning Sunny's mortal remains were burried at Cascia Cemetry. It was a very sad scene, that there were very few, could count within ten- konkani writers and dramtists. A man who served the Konkani theatre and language for decades was buried like an orphan. If there were no inmates of St. Antony's poor homes, it would have appeared like the burial of a beggar died on the street! This is what Konkani language lovers repay? I was looking for those great editors, writers, critics at the burial of a great dramatist. Where were they?
