Udupi, Feb 8: K Jayaprakash, chairman, Karnataka Backward Class Commission inaugurated the ‘Obavva Self-defence art' training programme at Mahatma Gandhi district stadium, Ajjarkadu here on Tuesday, February 8.

The training is for girls students in Backward Classes and Social Welfare department hostels in order to enable them to defend themselves against physical attacks. The government aims to equip girl students in self-defence mechanism and boost their confidence.

Jayaprakash Hegde said, "Good projects come from good thinking. This is one of the best projects initiated by the government keeping in mind the the safety of a girl child. This project should not be limited to OBC but all should get its benefit in the coming days."

Deputy commissioner Kurma Rao said, "This is a good programme. All the students should participate in the training and make use of it. Self defence will help build self-confidence among girls and it enhances health as well. I wish that the government extends this training statewide."

The programme was launched with the absence of district in-charge Minister S Angara and he wished the trainees via video conferencing.

Dr Naveen Bhat Y, CEO, Zilla Panchayat, Mattaru Ratnakar Hegde, president, Coastal Development Authority, Sumithra Nayak, president, City Municipal Council and others were present.

Devendra S Biradar, district officer, Backward Classes Welfare department welcomed the gathering. S Ramesh proposed a vote of thanks.
