Madikeri, Feb 11: Attacked by the other inmates of minorities’ hostel for wearing saffron shawl on Tuesday, a student, Antony Prajwal (18), attempted suicide by consuming rat poison. Antony, a first year student of the government polytechnic at Kushalnagar in Kodagu district, had called his friends on phone on Thursday to inform them about consuming rat poison to end life. He then switched his phone off.

The students who rushed to search him found him near the Kushalnagar inspection bungalow, and got him admitted into the community health centre. Later, he was taken to the district hospital at Madikeri for advanced treatment.

Antony told the police that several students had assaulted him but the police had taken only one into custody and questioned him. He said that the students in the hostel are keeping away from him, and even the wardens consider him as a criminal. "They have been calling my mother in the village and asking her to take me away from the hostel. I am not getting justice. Therefore I tried to kill myself," he told the police.

Kushalnagar police are investigating the case further.
