Belagavi: Thieves steal Rs 4.37 crore cash, 3.150 kg gold from bank

Belagavi, Mar 7: Thieves strike it rich in a theft which they performed during the early hours of Sunday March 6. They targetted Belagavi District Central Cooperative Bank's Murgod branch in Saundatti taluk. Rs 4.37 crore in cash and 3.150 kg gold ornaments were stolen from the bank.

The thieves used duplicate keys to open the shutter, strong room and locker of the bank from where they took all the cash and valuables.

The thieves also took away the CCTV cameras and DVR from the bank. The theft of such a large magnitude, which happened in a small town with a population of 12,000, has given rise to worry among the people who have their deposits and gold in the bank.

District superintendent of police, Laxman Nimbargi, additional superintendent of police, Manahand Nandagaonvi, deputy superintendent of police, Ramanagouda Hatti, Saudnatti circle police inspector, Manjunath Naduvinamani etc visited the spot and undertook investigation.

President of the bank, Ramesh Katti, gave the information that the manager told him that the theft happened at 4.40 am on Sunday. Reason for keeping such a huge amount of cash in the bank is unknown.
