Gadag, Mar 8: To register their opposition against the action taken by the forest department officials to evict farmers occupying forest land, two among those who face the prospects of losing their lands, consumed insecticide. One among these two died as treatment given to her failed to save her life.

The deceased was Nirmala Patil (33). The other woman who consumed the insecticide, identified as Saroja Shantagouda Patil, is out of danger, doctors said.

The forest officials had made preparations to dig trenches around the land falling under their department and to mark the border of the reserve forest area. The women from the village who are tilling the forest land without authority, argued with the officials. At this time, the above two women consumed insecticide.
