Chikkamagaluru: Aged couple dig 55-foot well for drinking water

Chikkamagaluru, Mar 9: Raju (65) and his wife, Sharada (60) residents of Anajur in Jannapura, Chinniga gram panchayat in Mudigere taluk in the district have dug a 55-foot well for drinking water purposes. The family, which is starved of drinking water, started digging this well on January 14 but have not got water in their well so far.

The couple says they are determined to continue digging till they get water. The couple living in abject poverty say that they have not been even given a house under the government's 'Ashraya' scheme and that for the last 20 years they have been living under a tarpaulin. They said that the government is not providing them kerosene to light up their lamp for the night.

Taluk panchayat executive officer, Prakash, who came to know of their plight through the media, instructed the panchayat development officer to make drinking water facility available to the couple immediately. He also promised to discuss with the tahsildar and provide a house to this couple as soon as possible.
