Hijab row: Shed ego, attend exams - Minister B C Nagesh tells students

Bagalkot, March 27 (IANS): Karnataka Education Minister B.C. Nagesh on Sunday appealed to the students who are insisting on wearing hijab to shed their ego and attend the crucial Class 10 examination.

"Leave the ego and attend exams. Majority of students are following the High Court verdict and government notification," he said.

For those who will not attend the exams, re-exams will be conducted after one month. "Barring this, no other option is available for them," he said.

"I have faith that they (students who are opposing) will also realise the importance of exams and attend. I repeatedly appeal... shed your ego and do not become scapegoat for others," he added.

As many as 17 lakh children are studying for SSLC exams. Around 100 students are said to have boycotted classes.

"I have made appeals many times and the Chief Minister (Basavaraj Bommai) has also made appeals," he said.

"Tomorrow (Monday), the SSLC exam will be conducted in 3,444 examination centres. A total of 8,74,000 children are taking up exams. Adequate staff is provided to conduct examination. I have confidence that the children will appear in the exams as per the verdict of the High Court," the Minister said.

"This time, the multiple choice questions are increased. Let students attend exams without any fear and with all the confidence," Nagesh added.

Minister Nagesh: No point in pleading. If this small number of girls continue to defy and are unwilling to appear without the hijab, it is likely they know they have no chance of passing SSLC, they would fail either way and continue to stay at home and get married wearing the hijab.

Agreed. If it was to divert peoples attention, then why you people started dancing to their tunes. Instead of protests, bandh, boycotting classes, you could have challenged the order in court on the first day itself and wait for the verdict.

All communal based egos started after 2014. Before that all people were living in harmony without any internal or external threats. Hijab is Muslim women’s custom, tradition and culture from centuries so, what woke you up now all of a sudden to create disharmony and agitation?. Hijab was worn on top of school uniforms without any issues from long long time, so what’s tickling you now?. Hijab doesn’t hinder or hide person’s identity, it’s only a headscarf covering the hair.

It is the right time for all schools to shift from the state syllabus and system to CBSE.So that there is no issue of the local language or the local politicians. With new initiatives of the state government and interference by local politicians, it seems the state syllabus schools of Kannada and English medium are doomed. When the center implements the same rule then it will be applicable nationwide to all states and religions. The only people to gain out of this will be school management who had less strength. Now they have opportunity to increase their student strength on based on religions
