'Shaadi Mahals' will be closed, scholarships to continue: Bommai

Bengaluru, Mar 29 (IANS): Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai stated on Tuesday that 'Shaadi Mahals' which have been established for conducting the marriages of the poor people belonging to the minority communities would be closed. He also clarified that there is no proposal to stop scholarships for students from such communities.

Replying in the Legislative Council to a question in this regard by the opposition Congress leader B.K. Hariprasad, Bommai clarified that there was an attempt made earlier to stop scholarships of school children and for higher education. But, nothing will be stopped, he assured.

Hariprasad had told Bommai that let the government do anything over the hijab issue, but it should not stop scholarships to minority students. "The scholarships to minority students are being stopped," he claimed.

Bommai stated that he would allocate Rs 100 crores for the scholarships and won't stop them. There will be no discrimination among students in this regard. Barring the 'Shaadi Mahals' (marriage halls) no other scheme for the minorities will be stopped, he said.

The 'Shaadi Mahal' scheme was introduced during the tenure of the former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and the BJP then in the opposition had opposed it tooth and nail.

Government should allocate funds optimally for all, not just some groups/categories. It is high time we do away with all the largesse for vote banks - which is actually impeding development. Today there is no value for merit and that is why the more intelligent youngsters seem to be leaving India. Only if we start recognising and accepting this fact, will we move forward.

Dear HENRY MISQUITH, INDIA. Do you mean Karnataka govt is proposing to bar muslim traders in Hindu temple surroundings? A govt cannot do that. But some people/groups are showing intension to do so, but that intension will not live long. Because, in our country most of the people belonging to different religions are living together with harmony. There are many temples which need Muslims' involvement during annual fairs.

Appeasement of minorities who are 30% of the population is serious business - it does not matter you are in Congress or BJP - votes count. Why shaadi mahals' scholarship cancellation when there is no Maduve mantapa or scholarship associated with it at Govt cost? These are the very people, hoping that use of oil is blackmail-able to any country. Alas, the fact that peak production of oil in this planet Earth peaked in 2010 is of academic detail that can be completely ignored in political discussion/dispensation.

Why Shaadi Mahal is stopped?. Then where poor minorities will get married in groups let alone they can afford the expenses to get married without Shaadi Bhagya. Govt should understand marriage and one time expenses involved is very high than running their daily ordinary lives.

I have read many news articles in this same daijiworld page about non-hindu families who extended their financial support to poor hindus. I think, their groups can arrange such 'shadi mahals' for poors. Govt need not spend money for that.

"Shadi Mahal" give dignity to marriage ceremonies and avoid illicit relationships which will take place with or without them; better to continue. There will be no slowdown in population growth by getting rid of these halls, if that was the intention of the government.
