Bengaluru: Former Mumbai lecturer runs auto rickshaw in city

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru (SP)

Bengaluru, Mar 30: Passengers often get annoyed at the auto rickshaw drivers either because they are hesitant to take them to the destinations of their choice or because they demand excessive fare. However, we have to bear in mind that some of them are well educated and are running the three-wheelers to support their families which is their responsibility. Many overlook these things and view auto drivers with disdain.

A person who earlier worked as a lecturer in Mumbai has been operating an auto rickshaw for a living in the city after retirement. He converses with his passengers in his polished English. One has to travel with  him  in his three-wheeler to experience his knowledge and fluency.

Nikhita Aiyer, a professional, admits in her post that she was shocked when she heard him speaking in English. People were surprised when she revealed that her auto rickshaw driver speaks English without mistake. Growing curious, she questioned him and came to know that he had earlier served as a lecturer in Mumbai. She told the driver about her destination, which is her office, located on the other end of the city.

The driver spoke with her in English and she was taken by surprise. He was very polite, cooperative and the lady came to know that he held MA and MEd degrees.

The driver in question, Pattabhiraman, told Nikhita that when he was hunting for employment in Karnataka, people often questioned about his caste. Frustrated, he went to Mumbai and worked as a lecturer.  He has been running the auto for the last 14 years after his retirement. He told Nikhita that teachers in colleges get not more than Rs 10,000 to 15,0000 a month but running of an auto rickshaw brings income of Rs 20,000 to 40,000 per month.

"This money is sufficient for me and my friend," he said, duly acknowledging that he prefers to call his wife a friend to give a sense of equality. He is very appreciative of his wife who he says is superior to him in some aspects. He admitted that his son pays the house rent and other than that he does not expect any other support from his son who lives separately.

Nikhita Aiyer says in her post that the man has no complaint about life, no remorse. Her post, which is four days old, has got over 73,000 likes and more than 2,300 have shared it.

You are totally wrong Mr.JNB..... it is our own choice .... Pattabhiraman sir happy with his work, after his retirement he choose what he wants. Is this wrong? As per me if highly educated also can do any kind of work which gives him happiness and daily bread. My friends also there highly educated but they are doing their own business and some of my friends doing work in different field for example small petty shop, parlour, auto driver, tea shop or else as Marketing Manager, as a office boy, as a carpenter, as fabricator............is this shame for them???? Do any job or business which gives you happiness and peace of mind.

I'm quite impressed with Mr. Pattabhiraman, who has no ego to work as auto-driver after his retirement. I've seen people especially Gulf returnees, sitting idle as they don't find jobs of their choice and some of them feel humiliated to choose low-level jobs or jobs with less salary. For the past 14 years he has been working as driver, which means he must be few years shy of 75 and still working. How many of us work after we retire? Having served as a lecturer, Mr. Pattabhiraman could have also given tuition to students and earned well. What an exemplary person he is!!

Earlier days Life was not easy ! In 1949-50, one will not get a decent job in Mangalore since there were no good forward looking enterprenues then. The standard Salary was Rs. 40 or 45 per month ! While in Bombay (now Mumbai) the standard pay was anywhere between Rs.90 to 120 per month. But still, we made our living reasonably healthy with that money coming in per month ! The present generation is aghast at the Work Culture of our Shri Pattabhiraman, a retired Lecturer, now working as a Auto Rick Driver earning his livelihood in City like Bangalore ! The inportant thing is to be noted is about our Work Culture ! PRAISE GOD FOR HIS INFINITE LOVE AND MERCY FOR ALL OF US !!!

Good comment. I wonder if the retired lecturer does not get a pension and has to supplement it with driving autorickshaw which brings him 30 to 40,000 rupees a month. Unless 15,000 the top lecturer's salary is too low to live with his wife and no other dependants, then the inflation must be really high. In my day - and I am talking about 65 years earlier, in Bombay, a mid-grade clerk that I was got Rs. 400 plus bonus, may be a month's or two month's depending on company's profit for the preceding years with ten years service. 13 years before that (1947-50) my salary which began at Rs.45 plus DA Rs.35 a month was thought by the government sufficient for a person. As a single person without bad habits like smoking and drinking, we could manage. Now, that salary could not go beyond Rs. 8,000 a month with inflation, and certainly not enough. With Rs.10 to Rs.15,000 a month, I thought two people can live a decent life provided of course they have their own flat or low rent flat. To resort to driving a rickshaw and earn twice or more, to Rs.40,000 seems far more a luxurious life. I may be wrong about the comparative rupee value in 1947 to now 75 years later.

Karnataka govt is not interested in creating employment opportunities for educated. Karnataka govt is interested only on communal issues and harassing minorities. Jobs are available only in non-BJP states and these states are prospering economically and less law and order situations and there is no discrimination on religious basis.
