Mangaluru, Apr 11: Postal department of the city has entered into an agreement with Lady Goschen government hospital in the city and has begun a unique service of providing birth certificates to the doorstep of the public.

This is the first such service in Karnataka, which is initiated by Mangaluru City Corporation. At present, around 400 to 600 children are born in Lady Goschen hospital every month. People of nine districts of the state and three districts of Kerala are availing the facility. So far the birth certificates were given to the family or parents in the hospital itself. So the public had to come all the way from far off places just to collect the birth certificates.

Now there are two options for the applicants. They can either collect the birth certificate in person by visiting the hospital once again after the delivery or get the same through Speed Post.

The application to get the birth certificate by post is a simple one. Only address and mobile numbers need to be filled. Rs 100 needs to be handed over to the postman who delivers the certificate.

The birth certificate will be printed from three to 30 days after submitting the application. The same will be delivered within two to five days after the printing. The delivery status can be checked on www.indiapost.gov.in as per the information shared by senior postal superintendent of Mangaluru division Shreeharsha.
