Smith not Surprised by Gibbs' Gesture

Johannesburg, 8 Feb, (PTI): South Africa skipper Graeme Smith is not surprised that his former colleague Herschelle Gibbs is on a donation spree, giving away all his cricketing memorabilia to his fans.

Gibbs has even put his man-of-the-match trophy earned in the record run chase of 438 against Australia back in 2006, up for grab saying, "The only trophy that I wanted to win was a Cricket World Cup. Now that I know that will never happen, I don't mind giving the rest away."

Smith said he was not at all surprised by the batsman's gesture as the opener had always been the one to give away his keepsakes. "I think it's driven by a wish to share his stuff with people who will treasure it. The memories are in his head and heart, not behind a piece of glass," Smith told the daily 'The Star'.

The 36-year-old used Twitter -- a social networking website -- to donate his belongings which includes Proteas jerseys, cricketing gear and even his medals. Gibbs amicably parted ways with Cricket South Africa (CSA) last year after allegedly revealing the dark side of the South African cricket in his biography
