Christians' Protest Rally Spectacular Success; Rains, People Pour in Thousands

From Our Special Correspondent
Daijiworld Media Network - Bangalore

Bangalore, Feb 21: It literally poured – both people in their thousands and unprecedented heavy showers – at the mammoth mass protest rally and candlelight vigil organized by the entire Christian community in Bangalore on Monday against Justice B K Somashekar Commission’s one-sided and biased report into the series of attacks against Churches and Places of Worship of Christians in September 2008 in Mangalore and several other districts of Karnataka.

The protest organized under the banner of Karnataka United Christian Forum for Human Rights (KUCfHR) at the St Francis Xavier Cathedral at Coles Park Road turned out to be a spectacular success with over 30,000 people, including religious priests and sisters of various Catholic Congregations as well faifhful belonging to the Catholic and all Christian denominations. The massive protest rally and prayer meeting coupled with candlelight vigil that began around 4.30 pm went off very smoothly in clockwork precision. However, with the onset of slight drizzle, the elaborate prayer service that was prepared with beautiful choir rendering by St Francis Xavier Cathedral Choir Group had to be curtailed and Bangalore Archbishop Most Rev Dr Bernard Moras, who is also the President of KUCFHR and Karnataka Region Catholic Bishops’ Council (KRCBC), delivered his presidential message explaining the reason for staging the protest rally and also the sequence of events starting with the Church attacks in September 2008.

The Archbishop pointed out that persecution of the minority community, especially the Christians, started since the change of government after the May 2008 Assembly elections. The series of well-planned, simultaneous and brutal attacks against Churches and places of worship belonging to Christians that began on September 13 and 14, 2008 in Mangalore, Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and other districts, including Bangalore and Kolar, went on till October 2008 and have been continuing.

Pointing out that over 350 attacks against Churches and places of worship belonging to Christians as well as Christians had taken place since the BJP Government assumed power, he said the ruling BJP that celebrated its 1000 days in office under the Chief Ministership of B S Yeddyurappa on Sunday, February 20, has earned the dubious distinction of the State witnessing an attack against Christians or their Churches almost every third day.

``This is in sharp contrast to the brotherly relationship and communal harmony that prevailed in the State between people of different religions in Karnataka until the BJP came to power,” he said pointing out that the law abiding nature and peaceful disposition along with the meekness of Christians was interpreted as a weakness.

The Archbishop said the Christianity in India was over 2000 year old, with St Thomas, one of the original 12 Apostles of Jesus Christ, arriving in India soon after the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. ``Christians have been part and parcel of India and have played a pioneering role in the fields of education, health-care and social service for several centuries. Christians have involved themselves in the country’s freedom struggle and had played a key role in the drafting of Indian Constitution by being the members of the Constituent Assembly,” he said pointing out that the contribution and service of Christians in the country’s progress, development and growth has been widely acknowledged and appreciated.

Archbishop Bernard Moras pointed out that the entire Christian community had serious misgivings and reservations when the Yeddyurappa regime appointed the judicial inquiry commission under the chairmanship of Justice B K Somashekara, especially its credibility and impartiality. ``We reluctantly accepted the Commission and extended fullest support and cooperation,” he said disclosing that he had ``personally accompanied Justice Somashekara to one of the places of attacks, namely to Yedavanahalli, and had explained to him about the happenings there. Justice Somashekara had promised me that he would be just and fair in all his dealings and in the reporting.”

However, the Commission gave ``a ray of hope that the culprits and organisations that plotted and executed these attacks would be identified and punished as per law” when it submitted its interim report in February last year and named ``Bajrang Dal, Sri Rama Sene, VHP and other Sangh Parivar outfits as being mainly responsible for these attacks and that the police and district administration as well as other authorities, that is to say the Government, had colluded with the perpetrators.”

``But, unfortunately, the Commission in its final report published on January 28, 2011, made a complete U-turn and gave every one a clean chit!,” he said expressing surprise that the Final Report ``indicated that no one is held responsible for these attacks. By exonerating the culprits and the organisations, the Commission has given a solemn burial to the truth. The Commission emphatically and without any qualification, exonerates again and again, both the Government and the BJP or Bajrang Dal of any involvement in the attacks,” he said.

``The terms of reference, obviously carefully framed, did not require the Commission to fix political responsibility for the attacks, much less make specific exonerations. And yet, at a dozens of places in the summary of its findings, one finds such sweeping exoneration of the BJP and the Government or any fundamentalist groups of any involvement in, or responsibility for, these attacks. The Commission does not tell who did these terrible things but goes out of its way to tell us who did not do these terrible things,” he said.

The Somashekara Commission’s ``mysterious 180 degree turn from its interim report and the final report and its recommendation to set up a Commission of Religions headed by a Registrar of Religions to regulate the activities of religions under Articles 25 and 30, exposes the sinister designs to control and subjugate religious minorities,” the Archbishop said pointing out that the State Government’s latest move to include even smaller religious minorities like Jains, Sikhs and Parsees under the purview of the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowment Act while removing Hindu temples from the jurisdiction of Muzrai Department clearly smacks of the ``deep and partisan designs of the Government.”

``After targeting Christians, it is the turn of even smaller religious minorities like Jains, Sikhs and Parsees. We strongly oppose and condemn any such backdoor methods to control and subjugagte all religious minorities,” he said taking sharp exception the Chief Minister’s refusal to give an appointment to meet the Bishops of Karnataka.

The Archbishop reiterated the Christian community’s unanimous demands, as voiced in the joint memorandum submitted to the Chief Minister’s office and the State Home Minister R Ashok as also the Governor H R Bhardwaj, for rejecting the Justice Somashekara Commission’s report in toto and ordering a CBI probe to bring out the truth and punish the guilty, and withdraw all the 36 cases lodged against 350 innocent Christian youth and payment of just and adequate compensation to the institutions and individuals who suffered losses in the attacks.

``We are Christians; We uphold our Constitutional Rights. It is the bounden duty of any Government in power to safeguard the Constitutional Rights of all citizens, including minorities, which is clearly articulated in Article 25. Let us not be intimidated by threats or attacks, let us boldly profess, practice and propagate our Faith. While doing so, let us respect the beliefs and sentiments of people of all other faiths and let us not in any way hurt their religious sentiments. Our Christian commitment calls for selfless service for the whole of humanity without any favour or personal gains. Let our genuine love and service draw others closer to Christ. Let them know we are Christians by our love, compassion and forgiveness,” he said.

Bishop Vasanth Kumar, CSI Moderator, in his welcome address and introductory remarks, called upon all Christians to remain united and be true followers of Jesus Christ. Rev Fr Ronnie Prabhu, KUCFHR Secretary, explained the aims, objectives and activities of the Forum. Rev Fr Faustine Lobo, Coordinator of the Protest Rally and KRCBC PRO, explained why Christians were against the Justice Somashekara Commission’s report and demanded its rejection by the Government. Rev Evangeline, Lutheran, Rev V M Samuel and Bishop Samuel Mathew of Believers Church, gave their messages. Msgr Fr S Jayanathan, Vicar General of Bangalore Archdiocese, conducted the prayer service and administered the pledge to all Christians, which was followed by a candle light vigil by all the people gathered even as the downpour started. Rev Yashwanth proposed a vote of thanks.

@Shivanand Shetty,Praveen Kumar, T.A.Mohandas Pai,human resources director,Infosys, said there had been a shift in the focus of the company. Pai said,"It is easier to get land in Pune than Bangalore. For three years we tried in vain to complete the land registration process in Bangalore. Now,we have more land in Pune than Bangalore. Honest people can't work in Bangalore. IT companies change perception about Bangalore as their preferred base. The corrupt "leaders & the lethargic" bureaucracy have frustrated India Inc time & again. So, the companies have decided to shift base. The apathy of successive Karnataka governments, the Infosys had dicided to shift its operational base to Pune. Within a year, it's Pune campus will surpass the Bangalore headquarters both in terms of employee strength & the built-up area.

Giants like TCS & WIPRO have Bangalore out of their major expansion plans. HCL is looking at centres linke Chennai & Pune.

As per congress BJP has not done anything, because congress cannot digest the development works done by BJP. Didnt you notice the recent ZP/TP elections results. Now you please dont comment BJP won due to money power, caste politics , liquor, or JDS splitted congress votes. This time please try to give different comment.

Again i dont know who told you about infosys and wipro moving out of bangalore. Infact infosys apart from bangalore are expanding their operations in the tier 2 cities like Mysore and Mangalore of Karnataka.

We all know about Bangalore’s pathetic state of affairs. Even large IT giants like Infosys and Wipro are contemplating moving out because of lethargic attitude and feeble infrastructure.
I still do not understand you guy’s logic. When things get sour - your standard reply “it is all because of Congress”. Grow up guys. You have been in power for 3 years now. How many more years do you need to pull up your pants? I did hear Nagesh saying the other day “Bangalore is going to be No.1 city in the world”. If wishes were horses beggars would ride.

These Sangh Parivar people talk lot about culture and religion. Can anybody tell me their contribution to mankind or Hindus in particular? If you see the quality of some of replies, it reflects their ignorance of Indian culture which is based on maximum tolerance and respect for others.

They use religion only for vote bank and try to brain wash the people by talking about their imaginary stories of moguls attacking India 500 years ago but do nothing on a present day when powerful attack on poor people and treat them as slaves. Even if you go to any temple people are treated as per their status and caste and these Sangh goons have no courage to confront the injustice done to poor Hindus. They call themselves saviours of Hindu culture. What a joke?

I and my children got educated from Christian institutions because we could not get equal opportunity to get admission in institutions run by Hindu Community. Reason is because we do not belong to particular community or have to pay huge donations. Can these Sangh goons have courage to provide justice in such institutions?

Can they do some useful contribution to the society as being done by the Christian missionaries? I find only few Hindu missionaries like Ramakrishna mission doing service to mankind but they do not toe the Sangh parivar line which is full of venom and hatred towards other religion.

Thank God for the peaceful protest, Press on till the records are re-written.the entire Christian community is together, proving JESUS is one and though we are different in theological opinion, we are one body in CHRIST JESUS.We need to come together often to bring peace and harmony to the other part of our society which is suffering.OVERCOME EVIL WITH GOOD,we have victory in Him Who has called us out of darkness into his marvelous light.Whatever may be the isolated motive of the organizers, The PRESENCE of the HOLY SPIRIT has BLESSED the PROTEST MARCH TO BE A WITNESS FOR HIS HOLY NAME.

Its time we think large ,whole human community,to demonstrate the love and mercy which we have received so graciously to others. The time has come to consider the church as one universal body and bring glory to His Name.MAY GOD CONTINUE TO BLESS US ON THIS JOURNEY.JESUS CHRIST,MAY YOUR PEACE ABIDE IN OUR HEARTS,HOME,SCHOOL,CHURCHES,STATES,COUNTRY AND THE UNIVERSE.

If your Church was attacked in Sharjah will you keep quiet. Secondly, if your wife, sister, mother was mercilessly beaten by the police during the silent protest on 14th Sept 2008, would you have passed comments like this? Because you are hiding in an Arab place, where you have no voice or guts to show any kind of protests, that is why your views are vague. I think Christians should come and protest for every injustice done to them by the Govt. especially our brethern in Orissa where they do not have the much required support and funds. We have to come and protest at every wrong deed done to us by any Govt. Afterall the Government has to see the welfare of minorities and should not suppress them. Do you know that the minorities are ruling every Arab and Foreign countries, because they are much educated and smarter than the majority.

350 attacks in 1000 days i.e., at the rate one attack per three days. Government of the day should take care of all the sections of the people. To keep Law and Order is the primary duty of an elected government. When the ruling party celebrates 1000 days in office, its law-abiding section of a society mourn the attack on its flocks. Even though being a member of the Christian community, I too have some doubt at times about blaming others behind the church attacks. In our locality some of the churches were attacked, but there is no presence of these so called RSS/SRS/B.DAL people in our neighborhood and the Hindu brotherhood are really peace loving people, with whom we maintain a good relationship since ages. But still can’t digest how the attack has taken place. Atleast some people in our own community doubt about the blames put on these right wing Hindu activists. Infact we find some lectures made by priests are meant to divide the people. Recently, my son was saying that the local priest has advised him not to eat any food served by Hindu temples or religious Hindu people. We have been sharing the food and helping each other and lives peacefully there since ages, but now days we feel there is some division in the community, atleast in the young minds, as my child every now and then coming and complaining about the neighborhood Hindu friends, which we never felt. And when we think independently out of the religion the church and the priests, we feel somewhere someone is playing in between this. Hope whoever it is whether it is the church and the priests or the so called right wing Hindu activists they cannot fool the community and the people for ever, and truth will come out one day.

Richard, shirva/sharjah, you are obviously a chaddi in the Gulf. Would the Arabs allow their mosques to be attacked, vandalised. Don't talk of things you don't know. How much Vatican funds do you think the Church receives? And only people who are totally ignorant or blatantly communal would talk like the Chaddi Parivar and claim that Vatican funds are being used for these kind of rallies. In that case, why do most of our Churches go on fund collection drives for their projects. People like you who do not know anything should not post seemingly stupid or ignorant comments. When somebody does something to highlight the community's grievances, we should support and if possible join and never oppose. If one does not agree, then it is better to keep quiet. This applies to everybody.

What you are view is 100% right… but we have a simple request or a question or a doubt why not govt. is taking any actions on them?? Why always they come out of the charges?? Why always they get political support?
As you said these kind of attack used to take place before the BJP govt. also but those (attackers) people were scared nothing used to happen openly… many people were banned to enter Mangalore…. Why not now??

    Dear, Richard, shirva/sharjah,

I think it is very easy to sit in Sharjah and comment.. because you are not facing these issues there.. Many a time people like you who stay far far away from the mother nation and write these kind of comment.. because you come once in a two year for two months and go back, you people are least bothered about your community and your place… just for the sake of show off you people join one Mangalorean group in abroad and conduct few Picknics and parties and after a nice booze start commenting on people, priests, nuns, roads, politicians everybody and everything back home laugh enjoy and then forget till the next party…..

When we raise the issue of distribution of booklets and pamplets demeaning hindu gods and false propoganda we hear that we should distinguish between "New life" sect and rest of catholic churches. Agreed. I undestand this. On the other hand when the issue of church attacks why can't we distinguish between BJP and some rogue communal groups? How many of you really think Yeddi or any other BJP leader in the govt. wanted this? We can clearly see the people who wanted to gain from this issue(egs: Mahendra & Mutaliks) are all in trouble because govt didn't support them. All these characters are not in BJP. Why can't people see this logic.
One more thing. Church attacks didn't start after BJP came into power. These bad incidents were there even before during other govts. THe people who observe the affairs in detail know this. People who just read the headlines might have missed those incidents. Now just because BJP govt is in power it has been made a scapegoat.

Overwhelming response, reminds me of the recent revolution in Egypt. I guess it is time for corrupt Yeddyurappa to go.

He is the most cunning chief minister Karnataka has ever seen.
Justice Somashekar is just a pawn in this mind game and I see two motives.

1, Last 3 years of BJP’s rule, Karnataka has grown a dismal 4.9% with no major achievements. Governor Bhardwaj has sanctioned Yeddyurappa’s prosecution and every one knows about Yeddyurappa’s shady property deals. I suspect Justice Somashekar’s report was concocted intentionally to create a storm in a tea cup and divert public attention from Yeddyurappa’s failures, scams and subsequent prosecution.

    2. If you observe carefully both Modi and Yeddyurappa play the same game “HARASS THE MINORITY TO APPEASE THE MAJORITY”. Modi has successfully done it in Gujrat and Yeddyurappa is trying to emulate the same in Karnataka. The only difference is Modi tried it with Muslims and now Yeddyurappa is doing the same with Christians.

I am glad that we Christians have finally woken up.

In 1000 days of rule, 350 attacks
    on the Christian churches was
a great accomplishment of the BJP government. Mr. CM, you did a great job! Karnataka
is no 1 in the nation as the
    record breaking persecutors of
    the Christian community. Why this
    anti-minority, especially the
    anti-Christian rebellian started,
right after the BJP came into
    power? When Mr. Mahendra opens
the book, a lot of secrets will
be opened to the public about the
    mysterious hands of the BJP
    government in the persecution of
    the Christians in Karnataka.

    The one-sided and unfair inquiry
    result of Justice Somsekhar, along
with the confession of the former
    Sangh Parivar leader Mr. Mahendra
have created a new chapter in the
    Karnataka politics.

    Dear Mr. Richard, shirva/sharjah,
    1) Peaceful rallies are blunders or church attacks are blunders? Kindly explain.
    2) It is the concern of the faith of the Christian Community. If you think it is politically motivated it is your way of thinking. Can't help.
    3) The bjp and its associates are daily roaming door to door with poisonous leaflets against other communities which is spoiling the society.
    4) You did not mention which party you mean??? In my opinion the solidarity peace rally of the Karnataka Christians against injustice report from Justice someshekar.
    5) Do you have concern for spending Vatican' money? Are you a contributor to Vatican?
    Ridiculous comment.

May our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ bless all the attendants for their time and pain in attending the rally. See how much the bjp and its associates have vandalized the churches all over Karnataka in the month of September 14th. In Mangalore for 2 days virtually there was no law and order and no imposition of 144 section and the funny thing was nobody was arrested. Free hand was given for blunderers to attack churches for blaspheming. Once the Christians started to protest immediately 144 section was slapped and innocent Christian youth were arrested. This is the vulgar work of the bjp and its associates.
