Mangalore: Two Die in Bus-Scooter Collision in Suratkal

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore (SP)

Mangalore, Feb 22: In a gory accident that occurred near National Institute of Technology Karnataka’s (NITK) campus in Suratkal near here on the evening of Monday February 21, two persons, Ronald D’Costa (44) from Damaskatte, Kinnigoly, and Baby (38), a native of Maradka near Moorukaveri, Kinnigoly, lost their lives. The ill-fated victims were travelling towards Kinnigoly from Suratkal, while the bus was carrying college students to their homes in Mangalore.

The accident occurred at the spot where the under-pass work is going on a near NITK on national highway 17. Eyewitnesses said that the scooter hit the bus coming from the opposite direction, when it was being driven towards the two-lane road at the above spot. The scooter was crushed in the accident, while the windshield of the bus was shattered.

Although both the victims, who suffered severe head injuries, were immediately taken to a hospital in Suratkal, they could not be saved, as they had bled profusely.

The spot where this accident took place, has witnessed several accidents in the recent past. The vehicles which move at high speed on the four-lane highway, suddenly approach the place where the under-pass work is going on, where they have to meet the two-way road. This is the place where the density of vehicles suddenly increases, and the buses coming from the direction of Udupi continue to be driven at high speed at this point.

Ronald, an agriculturist by profession, who had worked in the Gulf region for some time in the past, is survived by wife and a son. Baby, who also worked in the Gulf, had come home four months back. She was hunting for a job here, and had gone to Mangalore with her acquaintance, Ronald, in this connection.

Aladdin Pais mantra sound adequate, timely and workable solution. We must listen to people who are wise and gain practical experience. Maximum accidents can be avoided if we do not rush at last hour. We have seen many families met with accidents when rushing to airport to catch plane. Among those 10 members only one is passenger obviously all those 9 members might have delayed their trip and drive under pressure rushed. Hope we will plan our journey and if we are late we will miss the train, plane or bus but will never rush.

I am daily traveller from Mangalore to Manipal. I have particularly observed Nitte University vehicles being driven by young drivers. I thought of writing to the authorities but alas tragedy has cost two young lives. Will the College authorities ensure better drivers for these yellow buses ?

While I feel terribly sad and convey my heartfelt sympathies to the families....

May I request the social workers in that area to rise and see how they can help.

Sure "Daijiworld" too can be of assistance in coming out with some kind of strategy / plan to ensure such accidents do not occur in the future.

This, as it is clearly explained that the area is prone to accidents, let there be a thinking camp to see how they come out of this and make it a safe area.

Perhaps some traffic wardens (voluntary locals) guiding traffic / sign boards much in advance informing of traffic congestion / educating the bus drivers through institutes / their companies.

Sure you all would have more ideas.

While I end I request one and all to value time. Being non time conscious is the root cause of all these accidents as people leave late and try to be at the destination on time, which in turn is the reason for speeding etc..

So I remind the saying - " Leave early to be on time "

This is my Mantra and I am happy about it.

Being in the relationship business I have many visits to make. Accordingly while all blame the traffic for reaching late, I blame the traffic for being on time. This as I tell my host to excuse me for being a bit too early than the actual time as I left early knowing if NOT the traffic would delay me :)

    Kind Regards

    Aladdin Pais

This is a sad news to read. People with variuos aspirations in life find this kind of abrupt fatal end.

If the spot where single road meets the double road at NITK is risky, it does not call for a public cry or protests to install speed-breakers. They should be there by default, till the work is over and the road is ready to use. It is absurd to acknowledge that how careless the concerned officials are...!!

What are the officials doing?? if the four lane is reduced to two lane due to construction works traffic must be managed with temporary speed breakers. Why our officials do not have such basic common sense? Why the public do not open their eye's to see around and raise their voice before accident happens? Why always we expect other's to do the job for us?

Very Sad.May their Soul Rest in Peace. May God Bless Their Family.
Roads here in Surathkal are confusing bcoz of construction going on,there should be point out signals or alert signals where one way roads joins with two way suddenly,as Iam local here in surathkal we can understand these roads and daily changes that happens here still we get confused sometimes, but its very difficult to a new rider to ride in this city. I request all the readers & others here to ride safely after u reach baikampady coming from Mangalore & beware till u reach udupi becoz buses here are too fast & speedy & roads here also very confusing until construction finish. Lets take care of ourseleves bcoz Govt. is not bothered about common people as usual.
