Mangalore, Mar 02: The funeral of Msgr Frederick V Pereira (74), former vicar general, Mangalore diocese, took place in Valencia on Wednesday March 2.

The mortal remains of Fr Pereira were placed at St Vincent Ferrer Church, Valencia, for public homage at 3.00 pm. The funeral Mass began at 4.00 pm. Dr Aloysius Paul D’Souza, Bishop of Mangalore, Fr Robert Miranda, Bishop of Gulbarga, and J S Sadhananda, Bishop of CSI, were the main celebrants of the Mass. Priests of Mangalore Diocese as well as friends and family members of Fr Pereira took part in the mass.

In the beginning of the mass, Bishop D’Souza spoke about the personality of Fr Pereira and said that he was a person who inspired many people with his soft nature and was committed to his work. The Bishop recollected the days of establishment of St Joseph Engineering College where Fr Pereira was key in the establishment of the college.

Fr Victor Machado, parish priest, Bejai, offered a meaningful homily. Referring to the Holy Bible he spoke about death and life. He explained the importance of death in order to reach out to God. “To win the world, death is essential,” he added.

After the mass, the Bishop blessed the body of Fr Pereira and this was followed by homage from Fr Peter Noronha. During his speech, Fr Noronha unfolded old memories the time he spent with Fr Pereira—being classmates in the seminary, Fr Pereira serving as an altar boy, studying at Jeppu school and St Aloysius College.

Bishop Sadhananda spoke about the work of Fr Pereira and thanked the Almighty for the gift of Fr Pereira to the Catholic community.

Fr Bonaventure thanked people such as Michael Pais and Edwin, who helped Fr Pereira during his difficult times.

Later, the body was taken to the graveyard where the Bishop of Mangalore offered prayers and blessed the grave. People gathered to pay a final tribute to Fr Pereira and sought eternal rest for his soul.

We wish to express our deepest condolences to the family of Rev. Fr. Fred Pereira.
Fr. Fred was a great humanitarian, a model of simplicity and a reflection of our Heavenly Father’s love for His children. The joy he spread around everyone he interacted with, young or old made each person feel that they were the most special people in his eyes.
We have vivid memories of his warmth and kindness while he was Pastor of our parish, Rosario Cathedral. We pay him tribute for being a friend and guide to all who he led in his various roles and all the great work he did to lead our youth to greater heights

I was present at the funeral of Monsignor Fred Pereira - one of the very best priests The Diocese of Mangalore ever had. His life history has been one dedicated for the cause of the poor and the needy. He was a selfless person of high integrity and character and could be relied upon for anything.

As Father Peter Noronha put it he was the right hand man of Our Bishop A.P. and supported him in any and every area where help was needed. The Petrol Station at Balmatta bears witness to his caring and sharing for the under-privileged Ricksaw drivers who own the business. During his tenure as the Director of Christopher Association he must have recommended and obtained loans for over 2000 young men to buy rickshaws. Father Fred is the one who started the burses to educate seminarians and must collected several lacs of rupees. I met some of the residents of the senior priests home at St. Antony's and some had tears in their eyes when they said that if at all they have a place to stay it is because of Father Fred.

The Valencia Church was full and the chairs outside the Church were packed to capacity. People from Vamanzoor and Madyanthar attended the funeral ceremony in large numbers to bear testimony to the work done by Monsignor Fred.

Our Bishop A.P., Father Victor Machado and Father Peter Noronha paid rich tribute to The Dear Departed Soul.

Indeed Father Fred has left footprints behind. He is not dead but will continue to live in the hearts of thousands of people.

Thanks to Daijiworld for the live transmission of the ceremony and all the well wishes of Late Msgr. Fred V Pereira could view it from all over the globe. Mangalore Diocese is fortunate enough to get one of such dedicated humble priest and with his midas touch, commitment and hardwork, he converted several parishes and institutions into couple of the well known brands of the diocese. It's a fitting tribute from Daijiworld to transmit it live for a person who dedicated 50 odd years of his life for the betterment of the society at large. May his soul rest in peace.

Mnsgr.Fr.Fred was a special priest and a good priest. He was also a good friend. Four years ago, we remember, we had to sign a special document at the Bishops House and Fr.Fred informed me that I should have a meal at the Bishops House for the signing ceremony. I told Fr.Fred that it is a special Day that commemorates 50 years of my leaving Mangalore, for the first time, in 1956. I humbly suggested to Fr.Fred that it would be nice for him and the Bishop to visit us at our humble home and bless our home as a significance of 50 years of my departure from Mangalore.

Fr.Fred willingly came to our home along with His Lordship the Bishop. They blessed our home and had a light supper. Before the supper I asked Shilpa Kumary, our maid, to lead us in Lord's Prayer. Shilpa politely asked me whether she should say the Lords Prayer in Konkany or English and I told her that Konkany would be preferable, and she did. It was an amazing moment of our life to remember. God is so great.

We watched the funeral services in Houston, Texas, thru the internet, more than 20000 kms away from our Valencia church. We then went to Michael Debakey Hospital chapel which is about 200 yards away from our home and prayed for late Fr.Fred so that he may rest in peace. Each and everyone of us have a "journey" that we need to embrace and accept in life, and that's "Insaahn". That's destiny.
