Mangalore, Mar 30: Our city buses have a charm of their own. They are not just vehicles of public transport, they are epitomes of human agility and courage. With limited seats, they have an unlimited capacity to fill themselves with the human kind.

When it comes to buses we do not think twice about squeezing in between a sea of people, even if it means hanging on to dear life on the edge of the door, or being crushed among hands and legs not our own, with our lungs shouting for air. With just a toe of one leg and a few fingers rolled around the window grill, we are able to travel miles, glued to the frame of the bus, staring right into the nonchalant faces of the lucky passengers by the window seat inside. Sometimes a bus is so full of passengers dangling out that it actually looks tipsy. Now that's what you call a 'hangover'!

But even for those 'lucky' ones who manage to find seats, the luck runs out pretty soon. It is a miracle that they are actually able to get down at their stop. Alighting on time is no mean task, and speaks volumes about the human capacity to push through the crowd, and that too in matter of a few seconds. And just spare a thought to the plight of the poor conductor. But given the condition of our roads perhaps it is best that the inside of the buses are crowded - it reduces one's chances of falling over whenever a pothole comes along!

That apart, the authorities must take this matter seriously and take measures to ensure that buses are not overfilled. Passengers should not be allowed to travel clinging on to the door, for it poses a serious threat not only to them but also to other commuters. Perhaps increasing the frequency/number of buses may help, with a parallel change in strategy, such that a separate lane is constructed only for the buses, with no other vehicle allowed on it. There should be doors that actually close, so that travelling by bus becomes safe for all. There are umpteen number of cases where passengers have lost their lives while alighting from the bus, and such cases can be reduced only if serious steps are taken to enhance passenger safety. Unfortunately, neither the authorities nor even the bus operators seem to be listening, or watching.

Reading this article, reminds me of one event during my college days. Travelling by bus route No.5, at the Bendore well bus stop, the bus was so overcrowded. The conductor who got down from the hind door to get in from the front door. The bus started moving, the conductors whistle fell from his mouth and was crushed by the rear wheel and the bus started taking speed and moved along, leaving the conductor behind. The boys who were hanging at the door knew this had a hearty laugh and did not inform the driver. The bus stopped next at Balmatta and there the conductor who was chasing behind on another bus managed to catch his bus. All this happened and the driver still was not aware. Everyone who knew this had a hearty laugh. A thing like this is unimaginable these days as all carry cell phones. Uff those were the days.

The road transport system is unable to cope up with the traffic and there is definitely a requirement for mass transport system like the Metro which is safer, environment friendly and faster. More-over there will be less traffic on the roads as cars can be parked at convenient parking spots if Metro trains ply regularly and on time.

It reminds us of our college days, with only bus to college from our place, coming late with small bus that had the capacity to carry 30 & 60 to be filled & not waiting for us to- some how get a foot hold would start to maintain their timing-we had no other alternative lef but to climb the ladder situated at back & sometimes get atop the bus-enjoying the ride with very heady breeze blowing at our faces, bending & sleeping to avoid tree branches with adrenaline pumping -on lookers shouting "daneya saifana"-Principal looking our descent from top-but helpless as we run to our classes, which have started a few minutes back.
It was a long time back but still the situation from B C Road to Bajpe roads in peak hours- a disaster is waiting to happen-I pray God or Gaurdian Angels protecting the travellers in avoiding it till today.
I request the authorities to find a solution early to mitigate the problems especially faced by girl students & employees travelling through this route.

RTO will be in Bar/ Restuarants on weekend alongwith any rich Bus owner. If any one gives complaint it takes years to take action against complaints. Other than this even if God also enters RTO office he will also corrupted. My friend is enough experience with RTO & his good office. Even RTA also cant help in this matter as per past experiences.

It is really a nightmare and how dangerous to travel in city bus.Commuters may be enjoying the journey sitting atop of the bus, hanging outside with just one foot inside, sandwiching in between the passengers without knowing/ understanding the implications of this kind of journey.RTO & owners to be blamed for allowing this kind of risky journey.Picture given above is the classic example of how people are enjoying and risking their life. For God sake and benefit of the people I request the concerned authorities and Specially RTO to look in to the matter very seriously and take some corrective/alternative steps before the things slip out of the hands.Even some conductors are behaving very rudely with passengers with their filthy/abusive languages.Such conductors should be dealt with seriously. Don't allow the people to sit on the bus top and overcrowd(overfill)beyond allowed capacity.Don't compete with each other, don't politicize the issue at the cost of the people. Only making money should not be your objective.Look at the safe journey of the people as well, they are your real assets.Without them you can not survive and run the show.Don't exploit/take advantage of their weakness.RTO must take note of this and dealt with accordingly. This is very bad,sad and pathetic bring bad name/repute to the developing city like Mangalore. Please Please be serious about the matter and act immediately.
    May God wish you all.
    Daily Commuter and sufferer.

Is this a joke or reality? Every vehicle is certified for a certain overall weight and or a certain amount of passengers in them. It started with the Bantwal taxis 4 decades ago but tode the overpacked buses are a danger to life, limb and the common man. What are the police doing/ what is the RTO doing/ what is the local administration doing- absolutely nothing.
Is the common mans life so cheap that it does not matter.
Are the bribes paid so heavy that the authorities look the other side.
I am shocked that some people are happy to travel this way.
What is the point of having IAS/KAS/ other gazetted officials if they turn a blind eye to breaches in the law.
My heart bleeds n cries for those who get maimed/ killed because of this indifference to safety.

Firstly, the bus operators never force you to board the overcrowded bus. It is upto us, either to board or keep waiting for an empty bus.

Bus drivers [city buses] do there best to avoid over crowding by not stopping at certain stops, stopping away from the bus-stops etc, so that people may not board the bus.

But it is the comman man, in a hurry to go office or home, who risks his own life.

I think, apart from govt, the commuters are also equally responsible for breaking the law.

    don't blame rto or govt
    it is demand is more!
    supply is less!
just find out what is the solution?

in some cities acomoation is so expensive one bed space shared by 2 person who are working on day/night 2 different shifts!

Dangerous vengaboys on the bus roof. Look at the bus driving thru curves road, electrical cable crossing overhead plus tree trunks. Whre is RTO? better to stop this and impose penalty both passenger and bus operators.

Filling the people inside the bus and on top of the bus too is not good. On top of that most of the time they will compete with other buses, risking people life. Human life is more valuable than money. Authority must take strict action. This is not enjoying the bus ride, question of everyone's life travelling in the bus.
