Mangalore, Apr 7: A man who was allegedly in possession of an antique Panchaloha Natraja idol, 2 swords and 6 gold coins approximately worth Rs 3 crore was taken into custody by Urwa police near Hat Hill on Thursday April 7.

The Urwa police under the leadership of police sub-inspector Suresh, acting on a tip off were successful seizing the idol and other valuables, while taking into custody Dr Gadiyar. According to police they are of historical importance. Natraj idol weighs 180 kgs. All the coins have ‘Rajamudre’ on their rear.

Dr Gadiyar told police that Natraj idol was purchased by him during 1974 at a sale cum exhibition outlet in Navrathna Hotel. He also said swords were purchased by his grandfathers in Mysore in the year 1954 and that the coins were possessed by his ancestors. However, further investigation is expected to reveal more details.

The police said that the valuables will be handed over to the concerned department.

Gilson Mangalore has very valid ppoint. Nataraja is an oxidized modern replica, which one may buy in any part of Tamilnadu.
We have never seen this type of outright butchery type harrassment during Congress. Even though the Congres govt is corrupt, might be less development oriented, they never attacked individual freedom so badly like present govt. Preserving ancient relics is a crime ? Rather one should salute and appreciate Dr.Gadiyar for preserving 180 kg Natraj idol. Shame on the authorities.

Agree with Mallya's comments and standing by with Dr. Gadiyar.
Govt of India should come out with the guidelines about antiques and heritage property.
if the message mentioned above is correct, Natraj idol weighs 180 kgs.
Jealousy might have lead Dr. Gadiyar in problem. Enemy within is more dangerous than from outside.

Nataraja is an oxidized modern replica, which one may buy in any part of Tamilnadu. Police are crazy to term it an antique (unless the item is over 150 years old).

Possessing any antique coins are legal in India. There are few Indian auction houses either selling or auctioning the items with a valid permission from the Archaeological Society of India. Anyway, four of those coins could be easily found in most of the old houses of the north.

Swords were too commonly available in Mysore and Coorg during Independence period. Again to call them an antique, one has to date it beyond 150 years, which may not be easy without spending money for carbon dating.

So, question, is why did they arrest Dr Gadiyar ? Defamation suit against the police force would rip the authorities off. God bless them.

The police has acted on tipoff to seize these antiques. The doctor need not be harassed without ascertaining the truth. Even websites display antiques. The police could still trace its origin before handing it over to the concerned department. I am either standing by for the doctor or the police in anyway.

Such matters are often blown out of proportion by the ignorant authorities. I personally know Dr. Gadiyar and he has no necessity to make money by selling so called antiques. The Nataraja idol at best is a reproduction and sold by many agencies. If it is a crime to own such items, then half of Mangalore would be behind bars. It would have been better if any action, like arrest in the present instance, was initiated only after getting opinion of experts in the field.

How the police can term Dr. Gadiyar as a culprit in this case ? It may be true that the items belonged to his ancestors. It is really difficult to prove his innocense in this case as the items are not purchased overnight from a shop.

Dr. Gadiyar might have purchased these items ignorantly. It is wrong to call him a culprit before full investigation.
