Mangalore, Apr 12: The Traders' Association, Tokkottu zone held a massive protest at the Tokkottu junction here on Tuesday April 12.

The protestors sought that the national highway road-widening should be limited to 45 metres instead of the proposed 60 metres. They also held a raasta roko as part of the protest.

Tokkottu town wore a deserted look as the shops downed their shutters. Police personnel were deputed on spot to keep the situation under control.

I think one needs to be realistic ,thokottu as a junction might get by-passed and lose its importance as a suburban business hub if roads are not planned and widened to take future traffic density to and from the area

This is how Indian Politicians make money. Bring some rules and tell that it is going to implement from a particular date. People will protest and finally the elected leader will get some amount and all things will change.

Due to widening of NH17,the most of shops are demolished & people are jobless. Govt have to think twice before they take any action. In Goa & kerala land acquire only 30mtr. We should have another Anna Asari in Mangalore too.

traders should be more cooperative. 45m is too less for traffic which is doubling once in every two years. ten years down the lane we'll need wider and better road to accomodate these many vehicles and in future there will be plans to further convert these 4 lanes to 8 lanes. why cry for 60m now. Grow up people, dont hinder development.

I have been through this issue when I was in Mangalore for my annual vacation. The actual widening of highway is 45 meters from NITK till Nanthoor. Only from Nanthoor to Thokkottu they have proposed 60 meters (6 lanes) which is totally meaningless. This will still keep the traffic bottleneck at Nanthoor junction. So it’s better to have it 4 lanes (45 meters) throughout.

These traders should cooperate with the authorities to widen the roads. Road safety and wider two- way roads will reduce head on collisions to a great extent and allow smooth traffic flow. The protesting traders should realize these facts and sacrifice little bit in the interest of road safety of general public.

It was always known that the NH would be 60 meters wide. These business men knowingly flouted the rules and got away for so long by bribing the officials. I would not sympathise with them.
Your headlines/photos of traders having massive demonstration hardly shows few people. Regds,

the international highwaylane width is 12 ft. the width of a volvo bus is 7.99 ft. if 4 lanes a 5 ft pavement & 2 ft center divider are built - the land required is 16.76m on one side & 33.53m both sides. why does the NHAI hv to acquire 60m!? for the good of society the individual must sacrfice! but 60m acquisition is not good. india is land shortage country we must use this resource with care & concern.
