India Agrees in Principle to Resume Cricket Ties with Pak

New Delhi, Apr 13 (PTI): As a follow up to the talks between Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his counterpart Yousuf Raza Gilani, India has decided in-principle to resume bilateral cricket ties with Pakistan.

Government sources said the time of the visit, the venues of the matches and other logistical issues would be decided by the cricket boards of the two countries.

Sources said if everything goes according to the plans, Indian cricket team will visit Pakistan first and the cricket team of that country will pay a return visit. However, there is no slot available for Indian cricket team to visit Pakistan in the immediate near future. According to the Future Tour Schedule prepared by the International Cricket Council, Pakistan should visit India for a three tests and five One Day International series in March 2012.

When contacted, BCCI Vice-President Rajiv Shukla and Chief Administrative Officer Ratnakar Shetty said they were not aware of any decision to resume bilateral cricketing ties. Before the World Cup semi final match at Mohali on March 30, India last played against Pakistan at an Asia Cup match in June 2010 at Dambula in Sri Lanka.

The last bilateral cricket series between India and Pakistan was held in 2007-2008 when the Pakistani team had visited India. No international cricket team has visited Pakistan to play any match after the terror attack on the Sri Lankan cricket team on March 3, 2009, when six members of the visiting team were injured. Six Pakistani policemen and two civilians were also killed in the incident.

The security situation in Pakistan continues to be a source of serious concern for international cricketers. Plans to launch a premier league and invite Sri Lanka to play in a series later this year have been put on hold.

Officials in the PCB have confirmed that other boards had in recent meetings in Sri Lanka made it clear that their players were reluctant to travel to the crisis-torn country for the Pakistan Premier League (PPL) Twenty20 competition because of security fears.

Sources said New Delhi has not lost its sight of key issues like existence of terror infrastructure in Pakistan and infiltration from across the border and would continue to vigorously pursue with Islamabad to take action on that front.

"India wants to engage Pakistan and improve relations. Cricket is one of the issues which has immense popularity in both the countries. But if there is a terror strike in India emanating from Pakistan, we would be forced to suspend all our initiatives," sources said.

Sources said the fresh impetus to improve bilateral relations has been given after the two Prime Ministers met in Mohali on the sidelines of the India-Pakistan cricket match and the Home Secretary level talks last month. Pakistan has already moved the Lahore High Court challenging a lower court decision rejecting pleas to hand over to India the voice samples of 26/11 Mumbai terror attack.

The neighbouring country has also released Indian prisoner Gopal Das last week and decided to release nearly 100 fishermen in next two days. India is also releasing around 40 Pakistani prisoners and fishermen by Friday. The second batch of prisoners and fishermen is likely to be released by both the countries by April 21.

"We have not forgotten Mumbai attack and it is still our priority to bring into justice the perpetrators of the crime. We need at least six months time to see Pakistan's sincerity to act in that front to improve bilateral relations," sources said.

After his talks with Gilani at Mohali, Singh had said "the beautiful game of cricket" has been a "uniting factor" in bringing together the two prime ministers. Singh had said "whatever be the differences  between our two countries, we have to find ways to resolve them".

We certainly dont wish to restore any sort of ties with our violent neighbour. Pakistan was carved out of India and India is its mother. This pakis are betrayers of their own mother who gave birth to their land... Some times I wish that India annex Pakistan and drive out its paki nationals to neighbouring Afganistan so that we shall have enough land for our own citizens.. I have never seen a country and people like Pakis who always have double standards and double speak..If India really wishes to restore any ties it must be conditional that ISI and Pak army should be kept away and there must be 100% democracy. Now the democracy in Pakistan is run by ISI and Military..... No... no... never.... its better for us... We are happy without Pak in all fields....

THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE !! Let Pakistan play with Taliban and not with Indian cricketers !! Very stange and shocking news is that decision was taken by our Government just after Terrorist Rana admitted in front of FBI officials that ISI &Pak Govt. jointly planned 26/11 Mumbai attack. (my earlier comment was not considered..please be neutral)

Cricket Diplomacy not withstanding, it is the non-state players in Pakistan that derail resumption of bilateral dialogue process between India and Pakistan. Terrorist activities from across the borders sponsored by the proactive military establishments and motivated by the radical fundamentalists is a bigger threat for a permanent solution towards Peace in the Asian Sub-continent.

We need to keep good relation with our neighbouring countries to have permanent seat in UN.. We are not at all interest to have good relations with arch rival pak..Once we are in UN we can able to control many of our pending issues..It's good step taken our government.. and more of confidence build-up amongst within people is good sign.. Who knows tommorow pakistan become good ally of us.. Many enemies are within India..to control them we need to take such steps..

People from both countries require peace..whenever peace treaty is going to conclude.. some or other problems arises..from both ends..either game of ISI or any other agenices..Jai Ho..

Resuming cricket ties with Pak. is nothing but diplomacy. Unless we rectify what happened in the past and real democracy exist in Pakistan it is our foolishness to offer TIES. It seems we are bowing to pressure tactics of Pakistan.

India is a peacful country! Many times these terms neglected by pakistan . India gave Pakistan some conditions to follow and mainly to stop terror aganist India. Unless they follw these conditions there is no use of any cricket diplomacy and relations will not improve. Main thing is to stop funding terror activity in jammu and Kashmir? Why there was terror atack in Bombay? Ask these questions first then go for any diplomacy?

Suspend all initiative right now. Because of our attitude we are not able to build better relationship with China.
