Udupi, Apr 14: In the backdrop of local grievances over Udupi Power Corporation Limited (UPCL), the officials of the state Pollution Control Board on a fact finding tour paid a visit to the project site of UPCL on Tuesday April 12.

The officials R Bhaskar and Ravichandra took UPCL environment department DGM Parasuram, and AGM Srinivas Reddy to task over discharging chemical treated saline water into the farmlands and inhabited areas.

The officials went on a door-to-door visit to farmers residing in Saje, Saju, and Kalachur villages that come under the limits of Yellur gram panchayat on the basis of the complaint lodged by local resident Jayant Kumar Upadhya.  The officials found that the crops were destroyed due to chemically treated saline water, and drinking water sources are polluted posing health hazards to both local people and livestock.  They gathered samples of waters for testing in their laboratories.

Jasmine crop perished:

Jasmine farming has been sustaining many families over many decades in the villages that come under the jurisdiction of Yellur gram panchayat.  Since the UPCL thermal power plant was commissioned, jasmine farming has been hard hit by the pollution.  The flying ash from the thermal power plant and discharging of chemically treated saline water have been polluting the water sources, besides causing health and environmental hazards.  Many of the jasmine farmers have lost their livelihood.

Plantain faming also hard hit:

The high-breed banana plantation of Aithappa Poojary which is located at Kolachur temple and plantation of Jayant Upadhya, and Vimala Muggerti are also extensively damaged due to the seepage of saline water discharged by UPCL.  The plantation of commercial crops – areca, palm, pepper, cashew, jackfruit, vegetable, and paddy is also widely damaged.

The local residents expressed their grievances to the officials on the occasion.

Addressing media persons, R Bhaskar said that the environmental damage caused by UPCL has been proved by the evidence.  “Despite the notices issued to UPCL authorities by the state Pollution Control Board, no concrete actions are being taken,” he added.

Locals Damodar, Sunil, Nagesh Bhat, and Jayant Kumar Upadhya were present along with the officials.

Frankly, this kind of pollution from a Thermal power plant has not been recorded earlier.

During our two decades of campaign against Coal Based Thermal power plants, we have never mentioned this kind and extent of pollution. Within a very brief period, UPCL has demonstrated how dangerous the situation could be. This is on account of their callous attitude on account of support and protection they have purchased from the State & partially from Central Government. Why should UPCL be supported by State Police force? Police should support the local in stead.

Company should be taken to task for not following environmental norms. Proper effluent treatment plants and ash disposal is a minimum requirement to be followed by any Company. UPCL must have tried to save money by not adhering to the standards and bribing enivonmental officials.

I request the Congress leaders to take up this matter with Mr. Jairam Ramesh. I am sure he will take appropriate action.

This is just a drama. The State Pollution Control Board should be the one to lead and have the authority to take disciplinary action who pollute the environment either it may be from Individual or national or multinational company. Shame on you State pollution Control Board. I think you finally reached here to control your financial target of the year. Our Minister of State for Higher Education being by profession Doctor ignored all moral ethics and support UPCL. He claims as it is a gift for state. Yes gift of slow poison to entire Udupi District

These revelation is fruits of continious struggle of innocent villagers against the mighty corporate and corrupt politicians. The truth will sustain and the villagers of effected areas are calling for all the fellow citizens of twin district to join their struggle... today it is we tomorrow you .. these guys are assimilating the total coastal karnataka for their petty gains. Our local MLA's are enuchs and do not have any sound.

I am telling you every little child suffering, every human toll due to this companies pollution is a murder.. and we point our fingers direcly to V S Acharya ..due to his insensivity this company is still not taking corrective measures. He is going to back this company untill his grave .. our curse with every member of his family. He destroyed us totally. Had he put his foot down.. UPCL would have installed the desalination unit to bring in sweet water into boiler (so problem of saline water steam wouldn't have arised), closed conveyor system to transport coal from the port and same to be stocked in closed bumkers, fly ash would have been transported thro pipes and not not in opn trucks.. fly ash pond would have been sceintifically bulit so that, it do not seep into ground nor fly around. It is a fact that, they have diverted these funds & show everything is ok on papers which is not. Wake up fellow brothers and sisters, we will be thrown into darkage for want of lighting our homes aparently we will still have pwer cut.
