Bantwal, May 14: BJP activists picketed Bantwal rural police station here on Saturday May 14 accusing the additional sub-inspector of misbehaving with BJP leader Kodman Kanthappa Shetty.
A complaint had been filed against Harish Belchada (29), a resident of Kodman of making an illegal entry into a house. In response, the police had summoned Harish to the police station for interrogation.
Kodman Kanthappa Shetty, who is also a member in Meramajalu Grama Panchayat had arrived at the station to settle the case through compromise with the police. But ASI Ravikumar is said to have used abusive language on Kanthappa Shetty and also made an attempt to cane him, it is alleged.
Condemning the treatment meted out by the police, Kanthappa protested against the ASI. When the BJP activists from Merumajalu got whiff of the matter, they thronged the police station and shouted slogans against the ASI and circle inspector Nanjundegowda. Puttur ASP Rohini Katoch also rushed to the station. Later, BJP district president Padmanabh Kottari, Nagaraj Shetty, and others arrived at the spot and urged the SP to take action against the ASI.
Puttur SP assured the protesters of conducting an investigation into the mater within 2 days. Amidst all this, though the BJP activists urged the police to let Harish Belchada go free, he was arrested as the case against him was already registered.
Bantwal SI Vivekananda and staff provided tight security when the incident took place.
