Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru (MS)

Mangaluru, Jan 9: A man, who lost sensation below the waist due to a road accident that occurred some years ago, is leading a dignified life by running an E-auto rickshaw in the city.

Subhash K (40), a resident of Kottara Chowki in the city is the person, who took the challenge life threw at him and stood up boldly.

Subhash, who was a truck driver was driving a trailer on a rainy night in June 2018 from Hospet to Lokapur carrying powder of mines. He could not make out the road hump near Kushtagi and the truck suddenly jumped over the humps. Subhash who was driving, was thrown up and landed with a jerk on his driving seat. Even then, he managed to control the truck and brought it to halt. He was treated in a hospital at Kushtagi and later brought to Mangaluru for higher treatment.

As the spinal cord got twisted due to the impact of the accident, Subhash lost strength below his waist and could not walk. Lac of rupees were spent for medicine and hospital charges but his condition did not improve.

Subhash was lying on bed for three-and-a-half years at home. His mother was concerned and said one day to Subhash, “Who is going to look after you once I am gone? Till I am there, I will take care of you.” This send shock waves in the mind of Subhash. He thought to himself that he requires the help of a person even to get up and move inside the house. His brother and his wife are there at home. So he thought that he should do something.

Subhash’s mother spent her pension money for his treatment. His brother also helped a lot.

Subhash discussed with his family members and bought an E-auto rickshaw that costs Rs four lac, with the help of his brother. He got some alterations done in the auto rickshaw to suit his physical disability and now working as auto driver since six months. He takes the help of his sister-in-law to sit in the driver’s seat. Till the auto rickshaw, he comes in wheel chair.

Subhash had worked in Saudi Arabia for six years as trailer driver. After returning to India, he had invested all the money and purchased a tipper truck. He faced huge losses in the business.

Subhash says, “I feel energetic and refreshed when I am driving the auto rickshaw and never feel that I do not have sensation below my waist. Only when I get down from the vehicle near my home, it comes to my mind that I do not have control over lower part of my body. My sister-in-law helps me to get down from auto and sit on the wheel chair.”

Subhash works from 7 am to 12 pm and 4 pm to 9 pm. He even goes for hire late in the night if he receives phone calls. He has been running the auto rickshaw since the last 7 months.
