Mangaluru, Jan 25: As many as 250 female nursing students at the Devaraj Urs backward class hostel at Madyar constructed a year ago, are facing multiple issues. The area is deserted and students have to walk the 500-metre long stretch in darkness at nights holding torchlights. The drinking water from the well at the hostel is contaminated with oil. The premises are full of ponds filled with toilet water. There are no passenger buses for travel.

The students that alight from buses near Madyar Pournami glass house on the main road should walk to the hostel that is 500 metres away.

The hostel was inaugurated by minister of social welfare and backward classes Kota Srinivas Poojary on January 24, 2022. The building was inaugurated under the leadership of minister S Angara and MLA U T Khader. There are 250 female students in both the hostels. Some of them are students of various colleges in Mangaluru travelling a distance of 19 kilometres while others study at Konaje Mangalore University travelling a distance of 8 kilometres to reach the hostel. As there are very few buses to Madyar, the students are unable to reach the colleges and the hostel on time. Though there are 18 electric poles from the main road to the hostel, none of them have street lights.

The water from the well which is contaminated with oil and is red was sent to a laboratory for testing under the leadership of Madyar councillor Harish Rao Madyar. The lab has issued a report that the water is unfit for consumption as it has an excessive amount of minerals. Yet the students have to consume the water.

The toilet pits in the premises are filled with drainage water. It appears that the concerned department has forgotten the safety and health of the students. The students have requested for a solution through the councillor.

Harish Rao Madyar, member of Kotekar town panchayat said that there is a need of Rs eight lac for a new borewell. MLA U T Khader has said that a meeting will be called before January 26 to solve the issues.
