Hassan, Jan 26: The Mahatma Gandhi statue that was about to be unveiled on Republic Day is carved in a derogatory manner, according to the view expressed by social workers.
There was a demand from the public to build Gandhi Bhavan in the city in the wake of 74th Republic Day. The work of the building is in its last stages. A statue of Mahatma Gandhi is also built in the campus of the Gandhi Bhavan. However, the statue is carved by an inexperienced sculptor and it gives a vague look to the onlooker.
The work on the statue began last year. The statue was to be inaugurated on the Republic Day. However, due to the negligence of the sculptor and contractor the basic appearance of Gandhiji in the statue is completely changed. The design is of low quality, according to the complaint raised by social workers.
When a person looks at the statue of Mahatma Gandhi he or she should grasp his personality, movements and the fights against the British. However, when one looks at the statue that is built in the city, such reverence does not come in the minds of the onlooker due to the bad design. The social workers have demanded that the statue be changed.
Already Rs 3 crore has been spent on the construction of both the statue and the building. Now the inauguration is postponed due to the public outrage.
