Alva Calls for Independent Probe into Nigamanand's Death

Dehra Dun, Jun 15 (PTI) A day after Uttarakhand government ordered a CB-CID probe into the "mysterious" death of Swami Nigamanand, Governor Margaret Alva today called for an independent inquiry to ascertain the real situation.

Expressing concern over the reports in print and electronic media and various organisations regarding the death of the Swami, Alva said an independent probe should be instituted to ascertain the real situation and do away all suspicions, a release from Raj Bhavan said.

The Governor has also expressed grief over Swami's death. Swami died in a hospital near here on June 13.

36-year-old Swami Nigamanand of Haridwar-based Matri Sadan ashram had begun his indefinite fast on February 19 demanding immediate stopping of quarrying in Ganga and shifting of Himalaya stone crusher elsewhere from Kumbh area.

Swami Nigamanand, who was fasting since 19th Feb to protest against the Uttarakhand government's refusal to ban mining along a stretch of the River Ganga near Rishikesh was actually poisoned by the mining mafia, on 30th April and as a result he went into a coma. He died virtually unnoticed, after fasting for 115 days. May his soul rest in peace.
No legislation was brought by the state govt to curb the activities of Mining mafia.
It is a right decision to call for an independent probe to ascertain the cause of his death.
