New Delhi, Jun 22: Reports about finance minister Pranab Mukherjee's fears that his office may have been spied upon have left the Congress red-faced.
Mukherjee, in his complaint to the Prime Minister, had reportedly said that his office was under surveillance. However, he also claimed that an investigation by the Intelligence Bureau had found nothing.
The UPA government, which has already enough to worry about without having 'spies' to deal with within its own ranks, is now faced with questions about ties at the top level. Various 'conspiracy theories' are making the rounds.
The Congress is not ready to admit that its own people may be involved in the matter, and has been pointing fingers in all possible directions from RSS to corporates to the stock market. One Congressman even felt a Chinese hand behind the conspiracy, backed by recent reports of hacking by the Chinese in other countries.
However, these are just theories, and there has been no official word from the government. But the opposition is bent on demanding a thorough investigation, especially in the light of all the financial scams that have emerged over the recent months.
Calling it India's 'Watergate', leader of the opposition Sushma Swaraj said that it was a serious matter that should not be ignored.
