Pune, Jul 3: Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni said that a bill to make the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) a centre of excellence would be introduced in Parliament.
A meeting was held in Pune on Saturday Jun 2 by Ambika Soni and members of Parliamentary Consultative Committee for the Information and Broadcasting Ministry including veteran director and MP Shyam Benegal, top officials of the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) and the National Film Archive of India (NFAI) to discuss expansion plans for FTII.
The ministry stated that this would enable the institute to achieve status of a university which will help in fostering creativity. It will also help students to study and research in India and abroad.
The ministry also noted that the step taken will enable FTII to address the progressing needs of the media and entertainment industry.
A Group of Experts (GoE) prepared the detailed proposal containing recommendation for reforming the courses offered by the institute. Chairman of GoE, P K Nair said that the plan would need Rs 300 crore for completion.
President of FTII Society and chairman of its governing council Saeed Mirza said that the plan also proposes the increase in salary of faculty and in the number of hostels.
The committee held discussions on issues like changing the courses and syllabus and strengthening the core committee.
