Kundapur, Apr 14: A thief who was trying to escape after stealing a scooter, got locked in the toilet of a hotel and was caught by public and police at Sullia on April 13.

A native of Mandya stole a scooter under the limits of Kota police station and was going towards Mandya. He stopped at a hotel in Sullia to have a cup of tea. After having tea, he went to the toilet and did not return for more than half an hour. When the hotel employees knocked on the door he did not open. On peeping from the window on top, they noticed that the man had collapsed. The hotel employees poured water from the window. The man, who had fallen, immediately got up and opened the door of the toilet.

On inquiry, the man could not give a convincing answer and tried to move the scooter towards Madikeri. The hotel owner informed the matter to Kallugundi police station. When the police stopped the man and asked, the theft came to light. Sullia police informed the matter to Kota police, who went to Sullia and arrested the man.

It is learnt that the thief is mentally ill and his sickness worsened as he did not take medicine. The scooter was returned to the owner and the matter was settled amicably.
