Prohibition on prasadam at Karnataka temples hurts religious feelings: Shobha Karandlaje

Bengaluru, Apr 25 (IANS): Union Minister for State for Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare Shobha Karandlaje has lodged a complaint before the Karnataka State Election Commission over the prohibition imposed on distributing 'prasadam' (offertory) and food to devotees at temples in the state in the wake of assembly elections.

Speaking to reporters after lodging the complaint in Bengaluru on Monday, Karandlaje said that in pretext of a model code of conduct, it is not correct to impose prohibition on distributing prasadam at temples in the state. "This order has hurt religious feelings," she claimed.

Election officers are issuing notices to temples on prasadam distribution. The notices were issued to temples in coastal Karnataka region during Daivaradhane celebrations. The notices have also been issued in north Karnataka over prasadam distribution to devotees during religious fares, Karandlaje said.

"In our religious fares, rice and sambar is offered to devotees as prasadam. The bookings for offering prasadam would have been done a year ago. Some devotees vow to sponsor prasadam. If it is prohibited, it hurts religious feelings. The devotees come from distant places and they find it difficult to sponsor it again. The practice (of prasadam distribution) should be allowed," she asserted.

Karandlaje further claimed that the Election Commission "is delaying the process of giving permission for processions". She demanded that the permission should be given in 24 hours.

"The vehicles of central leaders are also being interrupted, even media persons are facing difficulties, this is not correct," she added.

State and religion always should be separate -- This is historically proved and written about ---- decline of empires -- nations etc -- When religion gets into administration / politics there is a collapse -- Of late MUTTS have got involved -- earlier it was on the periphery --

What are your works to the state on the whole after becoming a minister? Talking about religion is not a work of government. This is only trying to make a section of the population happy. All this is drama and over acting.

Rolf Dubai, Even free Iftaar is also banned during Ramdhan in Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Mostly people from asean/african expatriates are use to thronging around to enjoy rich food offered by wealthy rich people it affected many. Here in Temples serving only satwik food consisting only rice, sambhar, palya, payaasam throughout 12 months 2-3 times in a day. Can you people undergo same..never. Recently we are watching in tv..how people in pakistan are dying to obtain atta and other household items. Some people even died in the process..government is follower of islam...food given even also follower of islam..people who taking food is also follower of islam.. stampede making also is follower of islam. Really great.

Half knowledge is always dangerous. Free iftar is NOT AT ALL BANNED in Saudi Arabia. The instruction from the government is NOT to serve iftar INSIDE MASJID ( mosque), in order to keep the masjid clean. However Free iftar is served in corridor of all masjids. In Abudhabi 30,000 iftar meals distributed to all worshippers irrespective of cast creed and religion.

Ozy Suratkal...Price risen in LPG/Petrol/Diesel are utilised in constructing infrastructure which is absent from the day of independance. It you can foresee everywhere work is going on connecting one another cities by way of bridges/flyovers/monorails/metros and many more. India is now growing very rapidly leaving behind countries like U.K, Japan, Germany, Canada. Agli Baar Modi Sarkar...even U.P/Karnatka muslims mind ringing same tune without knowing. Syvarna Yuga already started in India.

If not for Muslims, this government has nothing tangible to win elections so far. We may be the fastest growing economy but fail at every index be it poverty, malnutrition, unemployment, corruption, biased media etc. Muslim hate, hindu khatra is the only way to win. With all due respect to the strategists, the formula is working. In their sleep they must be thanking the muslims for being there. Congress did the same and ruled for many years, the current govt took a cue from this and went wild with thier divisive politics. Unlike congress they are here to stay. The minds are programed to vote based on religion and not development. Things are not going to change till the media starts highlighting issues of the common man, price rise, unemployment etc. The media is well managed now by the strategists to keep the issues pertained to religion only as a part of discussion. There are many good things this goverment is doing but the people are programmed to not ask questions anymore. This is very dangerous for any democracy. inclusive politics will not get votes in this country or development. This is the harsh truth.

@ Paisam, what you said can happen in other places of worship too, in the form of gift or donation or even promises. But the tradition and practices which had been happening for years should be permitted. If the EC is so suspicious let them monitor what is going on or let the representatives of suspecting parties keep a watchful eye on their activities.
