New Delhi, July 19 (IANS) After giving rib-tickling hits like the "Golmaal" series and "All The Best", director Rohit Shetty is back with a full-fledged action film "Singham", with his lucky mascot Ajay Devgn, which releases Friday.
Produced by Reliance Entertainment, the film is a remake of Tamil blockbuster "Singham" and it marks southern actress Kajal Aggarwal's debut in Bollywood opposite Ajay.
Set in the backdrop of Shivgad, a small village on the border of Maharashtra and Goa, "Singham" will chronicle the story of an honest and diligent cop Bajirao Singham (Ajay), who fights against injustice and prejudice with his own ethics and principles.
However, Singham's life turns around with the entry of powerful criminal-cum-politician Jaykant Shikre (Prakash Raj). The destiny brings Singham and Shikre in front of each other challenging Singham's morals and beliefs.
Shikre, who rules Goa, leaves no stone unturned to make Singham's life a nightmare. But it's Singham's supportive girlfriend Kavya (Kajal Aggarwal) and his tryst with late Rakesh Kadam's family makes Singham realise the importance to bring a change in the system and eradicate the root cause Jaykant Shikre, by not going against the law of force, but by being a powerful part of it.
As the movie has a Maharashtrian backdrop, Shetty has cast as many as 15 Marathi actors - Ashok Saraf, Sachin Khedekar, Sonali Kulkarni, Anant Jogue, Vijay Patkar, Agasthya Dhanorkar, Suchitra Bandekar, Jayant Sawarkar, Suhasini Deshpande, Meghna Vaidya, Ashok Samarth, Kishore Nandlaskar, Ravindra Berde, Pradeep Welankar and Hemu Adhikari.
Shetty debuted as a director with action-thriller "Zameen" in 2003, but after that he shifted focus on comedies and now after a long time the filmmaker is returning with an action movie. Ajay is also back into the action mode after eight years.
The director admits that high point of the film is the raw action.
Ajay has also beefed up for his role in the film and will be seen flaunting the six-pack abs in the movie. The actor admits he didn't have to workout a lot but indeed followed a strict diet.
The actor has even taken lessons in Marathi and has sought help from wife Kajol, who is half-Maharashtrian and has done all the stunts himself.
Whether the team of Ajay and Rohit will be able to create the same magic like their "Golmaal" series is yet to be seen.
