Over 350 students and staff participated in the programme, with the goal of providing a comprehensive understanding of global cyber crime attacks. The session included practical demonstrations, showed the methods employed by cybercriminals on the internet, and offered essential guidance to protect oneself from such threats.
They spoke about social engineering, which refers to the manipulation of an individual to disclose confidential information or perform an action that allows the attacker to gain unauthorized access to a system or information. It is often used to bypass security procedures by using psychological techniques to convince individuals to reveal sensitive information or perform actions that are not in their best interest. Common tactics used in social engineering include deception, impersonation, pretexting, phishing emails, and over the phone scams. Social engineering can pose a significant threat to individuals and organizations, and it's essential to be aware of the tactics used and practice caution when sharing sensitive information.
Smishing is a social engineering attack that uses fake mobile text messages to trick people into downloading malware, sharing sensitive information, or sending money to cybercriminals. The term ‘smishing’ is a combination of ‘SMS’ - or ‘short message service’, the technology behind text messages -and ‘phishing’.
Vishing calls, smashing, and phishing are all types of social engineering attacks with the intent of gaining personally identifiable information that will enable fraudsters to gain access to a user's account. There were other such topics which were discussed, thereby enlightening the students on being cyber aware and cyber safe.
