Mangaluru/Udupi: Heavy rains – Holiday declared for schools, PU colleges on Jul 5

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru/Udupi (JD)

Mangaluru, Jul 4: The respective district administrations of the twin districts have declared a holiday for the schools and pre-university colleges of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi on Wednesday, July 5 in wake of the heavy downpour that is lashing these areas.

DK and Udupi's respective deputy commissioners Mullai Mugilan and Kurma Rao, in concurrence with the District Disaster Management Authority, have declared the holiday for all Anganwadi centres, government and private primary and high schools and pre-university colleges on July 5.

In addition, instructions are given for public to safeguard against dangers that may arise due to continuous rains. Parents are instructed to prevent their children from going near low lying areas filled with water, ponds, river banks and beaches.

Nodal officers nominated by the district administration should be alert 24x7 and respond to public grievances immediately and be in touch with control room of DC office. The department officials concerned have been instructed to open grievance centres in every taluk and be ready to deal with any situation.

The Udupi DC had assigned the tahsildars and Block Education Officers (BEO) the responsibility of making a decision regarding school closures. However, due to the relentless rain situation in the district, Kurma Rao has taken the decision to declare a holiday for schools and pre-university colleges on June 5, 2023.

An official order regarding the holiday will be issued shortly by the Udupi DC, ensuring that students and staff members can stay safe amidst the challenging weather conditions.

By declaring unnecessary holidays, we are being extremely overprotective of these children and teenagers, which does not augur well for their future! BTW 😂 where is the REDFLAG??

Safety and health are imperative. This practice is in existence for ages and in many countries. We must realize the purpose before we err the schools

Over development and unchecked engineering is causing havoc that we in the 50's and 60's never experienced despite of heavier rainfalls. The Municipality of both Udupi and Mangalore are responsible for the present state, as they do not have any fixed ecological factors taken into consideration whilst taking into consideration the approval given to developers and builders. All field lands that used to balance the rain water have now been sold and developed and with poor drainage systems and maintenance of it, this is causing the present day misery which sadly the Commissioners of both the Districts, who are basically outsiders, do not know anything about ecology and the level of Municipal corruption. They just declare a holiday and think they have done a great job! They never walk in the rain to see and check why the water accumulation or the flooding, that never occurred prior to all today's development in these twin cities.

Yes, he is Antaryami; days after he spoke vociferously on removing corruption, nine highly corrupt politicians from a neighbouring state have jumped into his party and instantaneously given ministerial berths; all corruption cases pusuka in one day 😉!! If it's not a masterstroke, then what?🤔🥶

Why not for engineering colleges? It feels like a burden to go to college in such shitty conditions. Are we not humans too?

No holiday for civil engineering students. Get on the field, understand problems of water drainage etc so that you can build better buidlings, roads, drains etc., Computer engineer students can sit at home and have virtual classes :-)
