Despite monsoon, ban on deep sea fishing, no shortage of fish in Mangaluru

Mangaluru, Jul 7: Despite the ban on deep sea fishing that is in force, fishermen continue to venture into the sea in small boats to catch some fish. Besides, fresh marine fish from Karwar in Uttara Kannada district, Ratnagiri, Andhra Pradesh and Chennai are being made available in Mangaluru city market. There is no shortage of fish even during the monsoon and also fish lovers need not have to pay more to buy the fish. Moreover, freshwater fish is also available in the market.

Fresh and big Bangude fish is available for Rs 250 a kilo while Maanji weighing 200 grams is available for Rs 1400 a kilo while the one that weighs 150 grams is going for Rs 800. Ademeenu is available for Rs 260, Nang at Rs 300, Kaloor at Rs 230 and Bolenjir is available for Rs 250 a kilo. Big prawns are being sold at Rs 420 a kilo and the ordinary ones at Rs 350 while the smaller ones are available at Rs 250 a kilo.

The Anjal fish that weighs between 2-4 kilos is being sold for Rs 1,200 a kilo which is about Rs 100-200 more than what it was during the summer season. Fish that are in storage are available for Rs 800-900 a kilo, according to fish seller Umar Farooq Kallapu.

Compared to Malpe, the sea in Mangaluru is deeper and so fishermen are able to venture into the sea in Malpe in small boats helping Mangalureans get more fresh fish from the place. Fish seller Sridhar says freshwater fish are also available in the market at almost the same price.

In the coming days, fishing activity is likely to commence in Panambur as well with the help of state boats.

Even during the monsoon Mangalureans are not facing any shortage of fish as they are getting it from Malpe, Ankola and even from far-off places like Chennai. There is a demand for fish in hotels. Fish seller Sridhar Bhatkal says at least frozen candy fish is made available if there is no fresh stock coming into the market.
